Why does everyone on here pressure others to thrift as if we're broke?

Why does everyone on here pressure others to thrift as if we’re broke? I want to know where to shop for nice clothing and the only advice I get is to go look for hand-me-downs.

Some vintage clothes were made better. Some people ask for budget options. Some people buy used to save money.

Skaters thrift because we get our clothes dirty and ripped easily. Idk why anyone else thrifts, to look cool and trendy or whatever

      >thrift stores exist for skaters
      >buying used, old clothes is trendy
You’ve fallen on your head a little too often. Be careful from here on Mr. Heelflip.

99% of stuff in thrift stores is completely unworn.
People buy stuff, don’t wear it, leave it in their wardrobe for 50 years and then donate it.
I have literally never once seen any staining, worn fabric, stretched fabric, etc. Infact I see plenty of stuff that’s even in the brand new packaging

While I do see new clothes while thrifting, sometimes even with tags intact, this is uncommon in my area. There are plenty of lightly used clothes that I find, but there’s also clothes that have been chewed on by clothes moths, have stains, rips, tears, puckering, and I don’t like reaching in pockets to find used tissues.

99% is too high. Depends on the kind of clothing, at least menswear wise.

Dress Clothing? Yes, more often than not it it was bought, worn a handful of times, and left to rot in a closet to be possibly eaten by moths a little until donation. Ties and some dress shirts are especially like this.

Everything else I’d say is 50/50 between well used and lightly worn. With an exception of jeans and shoes being uniformly beaten to shit upon hitting the thrift store.

People pressure to thrift because it can given decent clothing if you look hard enough or wide enough. Granted they probably aren’t as good as before the secondhand boom, but it’s still worth it if you know what you’re looking for.

ebay and Poshmark are better though. Especially poshmark if you know your size for a certain brand. Literally a good deal of bored wifes/gfs selling clothes they have no idea the worth of for pocket change.

I can get a $250 dollar designer tie for $2.50 at Goodwill. Ties, dress shirts and sport coats are a steal there. Pants are difficult though. They get snatched up quick and inventory for them is usually low in the males section.

Maybe I’m off the mark on this but I feel like the standard for clothing quality is just lower today in a way that makes it hard to find interesting new clothing of decent quality. If I want some good quality shirts or jeans made today, I can certainly get them from certain brands, but those brands often revolve around having quality materials and construction and not much else in terms of design. Meanwhile you’ve got endless brands pumping out clothes that may be immediately visually interesting but are made in Indonesia from mostly polyester. Like I said maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about and some anon will tell me "clearly you’ve never heard of x brand poorfag" or some shit like that

This is mostly true. Plenty of companies are outsourcing work to cheap Asian subcontractors and using thinner, lower quality materials, weaving techniques, and dyes.

New clothes are shit quality and fit like shit, why wouldn’t you get something vintage and higher quality at a fraction of the price what also fits and looks better, 99% of the time the clothes are not even worn out either.

  6. Anonymous says:

unless you’re going for a vintage look there’s almost no reason to buy secondhand clothes, things just used to be made higher quality

If you’re into fashion, and not some rando pleb trying all-too-hard to impress the weaker, especially mentally, sex, then there is no alternative. Decades of realized ideas at your fingertips, often in excellent condition, in the perfect size, in the exact shade of color you were looking. There’s no hecking contest. I buy from Japanese sellers you think were handling classified documents with the level of attention to detail they invest. I love it. It’s all to your loss.

It first started as practical advice to be able to find vintage shit for a good price and have fun while doing so, but now it’s a show of superiority since it implies you’re normal enough to go outside, interact with other human beings, and perhaps even DRIVE lol.

There are a lot of good reasons to thrift aside from strictly saving money. It makes getting initially into fashion much easier because you aren’t investing nearly as much money into it and your money goes further. It’s also easier because you have most style available whereas a lot of stores hve limited selection, especially in person. It’s also nice because you can go to normal clothing stores and their selection will remain the same for often an entire season, whereas you can go to the same thrift store once a week and find new things constantly.
When comparing what I’ve been able to find at thrift stores and what I’ve bought new I debate whether I should even buy new shit. You can find new shit with the tags at a thrift store for a fraction of the price, and on top of everything else hunting for something cool is just fun. It’s an activity.

thrifting sucks where i live (toronto). it must be nicer in more smaller towns and cities where there aren’t nuhipster altsissies combing for anything they can relist on depop.

    • Anonymous says:

      lol no
From experience, smaller towns have a smaller selection and consistently str8 outta walmart. You might get actual vintage when some boomer kicks the bucket, but it doesn’t happen often enough to guarantee a consistent supply. You just have to go often enough to see the good stuff in the cities.

      • Anonymous says:

lol yes? the further i left from the city core the nicer things i found but its not worth taking a trip. everything in store is not sourced from local donations only, they also get stock from a distribution warehouse.

you must have literally no life or think my time is worth dumpster diving for nordstrom clearance rack and torn apcs again, poorgay zoomie

          • Anonymous says:

            >dumpster diving for nordstrom clearance rack and torn apcs again,
That is more or less the average flyover thrift store fare.

half the time you’re actually broke, or at least have wildly unrealistic expectations as to what something would cost new
the other half of the time you’re looking for something that is out of style in the main stream and the only way you’re going to find it is bespoke or second hand

  12. Anonymous says:

Because there’s a contradiction in fashion.
    >fashion is only appealing to little kids trying to get laid
    >costs a heckload
    >zoomer can’t afford it
    >adult male has money and assets
    >money and assets are way more attractive than having the "best raw selvedge japanese denim dipped in a stinky lake"
    >adult male has no need for expensive clothing
And if you wanted to flex with expensive clothes, you don’t ask here you go look whatever hebrews give to rappers and copy it. So like a versace robe, gucci glasses and so on. Gaudy shit with a nametag.

    • Anonymous says:

Dressing nice gets you laid. Who cares if some roastie you bag marries some pencil-neck accountant-turned-CFO millionaire when she turns 30? Right now she’s 20 and just wants a guy that dresses OK, smells good, and has a decent personality. It’s not like you’re going to want her when she gets older anyways.

      • Anonymous says:

        >It’s not like you’re going to want her when she gets older anyways
Nothing wrong with MILFS, hecked 40 plus year olds, better to talk to too because they have more life experience.
        >Dressing nice gets you laid
        Not necessarily.

  13. Anonymous says:

    >buying actual vintage clothing at a goodwill or similar shop because its super cheap
    >it gets frowned on

    >buy designer clothes that are made to look vintage for $200+
    >it gets praised

this is why i never understood fashion. i just wear whatever i feel like.
