It does look awful, but it’s based on a character that was always supposed to look barely acceptably dressed, grungy, dirty, only holding it together by his charm. A sort of 1980s sleazecore, I guess. Loved Hellblazer comics growing up. >yes I was a major edgelord who smelled bad as a kid ok
It’s fine if you’re wearing it as outerwear, but you need to take it off when you’re indoors. If you’re sitting at your desk or standing around a conference room wearing a trench coat, that’s pretty cringe.
Get a smoking jacket, it might look incredibly casual in a Hugh Hefner sense. Not exactly work wear, but nobody uses smoking jackets anymore so can define a new use for it.
Especially these days where people can be casual at work, why not a little more upscale casual. Every day is a cocktail party kinda casual.

do you think the buttoning is inappropriate?

that’s a nehru jacket

I mean the one on the left, I didn’t mean that weird coat on the right.
The ropes to button it look /fashion/ but I was asking if it is too inappropriate for a dinner jacket.

Do people really dress for dinner anymore? Aren’t those old rules passé and made for a different time?
Traditionally a smoking jacket is never used except in complete leasure activities like having a morning drink and cigarette by the pool or whatever. There is a reason why Hugh Hefner constantly wore one everywhere as a fashion statement.
But nobody uses it at all these days except people who larp. But they are stylish and brings a little fun to a shirt and tie. I think it could work in other situations.
It just requires a bit of a confident "yeah I’m using a smoking jacket as a dinner jacket, what about it" attitude. If you can vibe it out then it can be cool I think.

Yes, in most evening events you can choose wether to wear a suit or a dinner jacket, rules aren’t as strict. >yeah I’m using a smoking jacket as a dinner jacket, what about it
most people today don’t know the difference, in continental Europe we use "smoking" for both attires so unless you are going to an event where people are educated about menswear technically it shouldn’t be a issue.
If you’re wearing a tie then you’re wearing a suit. Nobody wears a tie casually nowadays. If something demands a tie it’s going to demand a real suit. This is just hard boiled detective larp
Ties can work well with smart casual types of clothes, anything from chambray work shirts to sweaters to leather jackets to peacoats. I recommend knitted ties for a more casual impression, but solid wool, linen, cotton, or otherwise textured ties create that impression too, as silk ties tend to look more dressed up.
Which only works in a dimly lit apartment with louvered blinds in the american south on a hot, humid night when someone has just been murdered and you’re called out of bed to come and investigate so you hurriedly throw on the clothing you had on before you hecked the blonde but you can’t find the jacket because you left it in the cab when she was blowing you and so you just put on the raincoat and grab your spiral notebook and fountain pen and race to the scene still drunk from the night before but sober enough to realize you’re gonna need a pot of coffee to figure this caper out!
That looks awful. You can wear a coat but it’s gotta be classy at least. Burberry makes good looking trenches for rainy weather.
What if it isn’t for rainy weather, what if you just want something a little longer than a suit jacket and don’t care for blazers and the like
I guess there’s always the morning coat, but it can look a bit dated unless that’s your style.
See above post about burberry
It’s called a Frock Coat and it was used in the 19th and early 20th century.
Go for it, anon, make the frock coat /fashion/ again because I’m really into it

that jacket looks way better

You might make it work.

Since most people can’t tell the difference can you use a smoking jacket instead of a dinner jacket?
Depends on the jacket
like the one in pic

YOU BRADERUNNER
deckard coat is a weird bird. in that it’s costumey as heck but, really, not that much more costumey than a regular trenchcoat already is.
I like the trench coat in all honesty. I’d feel silly wearing one, since I don’t wear a suit.
That’s John Constantine though…
He’s into magic and fights demons ‘n stuff.
You should wear it over a jacket, then it has the necessary structure to look good
OMG what are these called. I know nothing about fashion but I want this coat so bad.
A mac

Not op but I wear bow ties casually
There are casuals tie though.
I wear a tie casually. And bowties
Self tied bow ties right?

The sports coat, dress shirt, cardigan, and tie look is in though.
Are you posting from 2009
I’m a neet can I wear a tie casually? I like 20s hardboiled stuff
Hello?
no bro, ties cost money and you are poor
I’m not poor I took out a loan
So below poor, in the negative money territory.
it is only done in humid, hot environments where rain is imminent, like the american south
otherwise, you would wear a jacket and a raincoat or you wouldn’t wear a coat at all
tl;dr
Clothing serves a purpose.
Carrying an umbrella around with you everywhere isn’t /fashion/ unless rain is imminent
there is a conspiracy to get nerds to wear ill-fitting clothing
beware
he’s wearing a jacket under his coat and it fits well
not sure what your point is
>not sure what your point is
that you’d look like shit wearing it. That’s the point.
How can I become a private investigator in the real world.
Get wealthy wives to fall in love with you and pay you to follow their cheating husbands
Do you even into film noir?
Come on man get real
It’s not a real job, boo
You’re saying private investigators don’t exist ?
They don’t exist in the way portrayed in popular culture. It’s a desk job
Bullshit
Get a license for it. Simple as. You can join a local agency or start your own by getting an llc.
This isn’t true. You’re gonna have to prove it
stupid.
You have no clue what that job is
That’s not a job you dipshit, that’s where to apply a state license. Keep talking out your ass.
Do you have *any* experience
You have zero clue
https://www.indeed.com/jobs?q=private investigator
Only good if you’re going for that noir private investigator look

Trenchcoats are very out of style
Coats only look good if you wear it in the colder months
pic related is the type of coat that looks good
Uh. No.
I picked this up today and felt pretty good about it.
if he ditched the tie it would okay
