Working at a bank is a pretty accessible and decent job that requires a high degree of professionalism. You can take some sales experience and get a job as a loan officer if you’re a good study. You’ll wear a suit full time and people are very respectful. You also get so much exposure to people’s private lives that it’s borderline gynecological.

Literally just wear it and call that the reason.
You don’t need someone else to tell you to wear a suit
    >my boss says I have to wear a suit
    >the event host says I have to wear a suit
    >my lawyer says I have to wear a suit
    how about
    >I say I have to wear a suit

People work a job where their boss demands they wear a suit, but what if you’re self employed. Then you’re your own boss, you can wear a suit and say your boss told you so.
But don’t you see how silly it is? That everything you do in your life you do because someone else told you to do so? And you won’t do things that you yourself want to do?

Just wear a suit, and when people ask you why you’re doing so, just say it’s because you wanted to, because you like suits, you don’t need a justification.

I agree with your message but what OP wants to avoid is not looking out of place and being judged. If you work at an office where everyone wears jeans and t-shirts and you show up in a suit and tie the atmosphere will be very strange. Dressing to make other people comfortable is also part of being elegant, as Hugo Jacomet often says.

That’s nice but the reality is that the suit is pretty much dead now. Once upon a time everyone wore a suit for all occasions, then it became the uniform for only office jobs, and now it’s the uniform for maybe every 1 in 50 office jobs.

And it’s only going to become less and less of a uniform over the next 10 years. If you want to wear a suit, you have to just do it and accept that you will stand out.
But also try to realize that just because you stand out, doesn’t mean you look bad, you just stand out. If you were wearing a banana suit, you would stand out, but it would also be stupid. But the suit looks good and nobody can deny that.
You will stand out, but you will also look good.

Good arguments. Gotta wait until I am in the C-suite (five years from now maybe) and I can start wearing suits more often.

I like Hugo, but he seems to live in a different universe. He talks about going to all these Italian places where everyone is dressing up but it isn’t true.
Go to googlestreetview, browse Italy, browse London, browse Paris. There is nobody dressing up. You might see the odd guy wearing a suit for work but it’s a poorly fitted suit and he is not wearing it becaue he likes it.

Kirby is worse for this, in one of his recent videos he was talking about going to London and how he has to wear black shoes and a dark grey suit because that’s what everyone is wearing in London… but nobody is wearing that, it’s not reality.

Maybe they are doing it for marketing I don’t know but dressing in a suit is not making other people comfortable unless you’re in the company of other people wearing suits. If you want to make other people comfortable with your clothes, you have to be wearing the same thing as they are, which is most likely a tshirt and jeans.
And if you don’t want to wear that and you do want to wear a suit, then you are not going to be making others comfortable, you are not going to be fitting in.

          >If you want to make other people comfortable with your clothes, you have to be wearing the same thing as they are, which is most likely a tshirt and jeans.

That was exactly the point I was making. Putting people at ease with your clothes mean that you dress on a similar formality level. I have been "overdressed" with my family because I won’t be ostracised by them for it, but I have noticed that they felt underdressed in my presence and that’s not nice. Once I even visited my brother in a jacket and he ended up putting on one of his own to not feel sloppy. That wasn’t my intention and would not have worked if it wasn’t at his home. Agree with the rest of what you had to say.

in 5 years time, that c suite whatever it is might not be wearing suits.
All it takes is some big boss to come out with a progressive new inhouse branding that everyone is going to be casual friday from now on and now nobody will be wearing suits.
Even if it doesn’t happen in 5 years, it’s going to happen eventually. The writing is on the wall, there is no industry that is getting increasingly formal. They are all getting increasingly casual.
Even with the increasing trend of classic menswear as a fashion choice, that will have no impact of business wear because it is just a fashion choice.
            Soon the situation will be
If you want to wear a suit, you will only be able to wear it in your free time, you can’t wear it at work because it’s unprofessional no matter what field you work on.

Personally I think it’s easier to wear a suit to the grocery store than it is to wear it amongst friends and family because I can see they are uncomfortable whereas the general public doesn’t really care

You’re right Anon, I wore a suit to buy Christmas toys for my niece and got positive or no reactions. It’s a grim future though.

I work in finance and the c-suite doesn’t even wear a suit unless they’re going to be seen by clients or it’s some big event
they literally wear a t-shirt and a blazer mostly
they’re trying to be young and cool but they’re all over 50

Never understood why people make a big deal about wearing suits in places like the supermarket. Do you get dressed in a particular way for going shopping? If I am already wearing a suit I’m not going to change out of it because I need to go grocery shopping or to visit friends. For me it’s a black adidas originals tracksuit for relaxing at home, going to the gym, etc and a suit for when I’m out and about.

It’s because the grocery store is the most casual situation imaginable. People visit the store dressed in pajamas, just rolled out of bed with messy hair.
So to say you go to the grocery store in a suit is a way of saying you wear a suit regardless of the formality of the occasion

    >suited
Overdress for your job. Nothing wrong with it unless you’re doing some kind of physical labor.
    >booted
Boots can be worn anywhere anytime. As long as you actually go outside and don’t live like a hermit.
