It is a very beautiful watch that needs some love. But since you are piece of shit you deserve to stick to you shitter.

        >the watch itself wasn’t serviced in 30 years.
All the more reason to service it, get it cleaned and oiled properly. Don’t wait for it breaking.

I found a 1940s swiss manual but it doesn’t work. How much does it cost roughly to service and get it running again?

Impossible to even give a ballpark figure because every watchmaker chatges differently and it might depend on area.
As an example, the best watchmaker in my city charges 50€ just for servicing a mechanical watch, which includes cleaning, oiling and adjusting anything that needs adjusting. If the watch needs some part replaced that depends on the cost and availability of the part.
More often than not the cost of servicing an unexpensive mechanical watch might exceed the actual value of said watch. It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth it (you really like the watch, it has sentimental value, etc.) or not.

It depends on the model, condition, how many original parts it still has (after servicing or repairing), if it works and how well it works (how many seconds or even minutes it loses per day.
I’m not an expert but a quick search shows that, assuming the watchmaker is able to make it work again, could be from a few hundred to 1k or so.
I think it’s worth taking it to an appraiser if you can and then decide if you want to spend money to make it work again.
Honestly, if it was me and assuming the watch was not that valuable, I’d still spend about 100 tops to get it in working condition. You don’t see that many cool watches around.

I got quoted $450 minimum by a reputable watch service near me. Maybe will take it somewhere else because it can’t be worth more than 1K. The downsides of old vintage watches I suppose.

Whew, lad, that’s quite a wad. Yeah, research the watchmakers in your area and see if you can get a better quote. Are you planning on reselling it?

agreed. too much. the watchmakers there are nationally renowned so charge too much I reckon-~$200-250 is roughly what I’m willing to pay to get it up and running. not particularily looking to sell would be a cool piece to have.
