Can I wear hats without seeming cringe? I'm not talking about beanies, winter hats or base caps.

Can I wear hats without seeming cringe? I’m not talking about beanies, winter hats or base caps. I’m talking about nice hats, about /fashion/ts. I know you can wear a hat riding or hiking because you’re actually being affected by the sun. Fedoras a no go, although they’re worn by /fashion/tties, I don’t want to project that image. I genuinely don’t even know what kind of hat I could, should wear with a sort of Americanized look in Europe.

      >meth man over here, you selling drugs bro? you got that meth lab? haha get a load of this guy, what a unique character
If you look like you’re trying too hard then you will always inspire cringe and there’s no way to wear an unusual hat without looking like you’re trying extremely hard. This is why fedoras got memed so hard but it’s the same case for literally every other type of hat aside from the few that are common for normal people to wear.

I agree with this. I grew up in rural Nevada and hat usage has dropped off quite a bit since the late ’80s and early ’90s, I blame asshole gays from California and everywhere else, I also noticed people don’t have an accent anymore and just sound like the people on TV. I digress though. You need total confidence to wear a hat and it sounds like you don’t have it. You also should wear boots, unless you’re an old man in which case you can wear sneakers with a hat. You should post a fit pic or two and as a bona fide, truck-driving, hat-wearing, resident of the bumheck American west, I’ll tell you if you can pull off a hat, if you look like a dumbass larper, or anything in between.

That actually happened in California too. I grew up on the northern outskirts of LA in the ”80s and 90s and people had a noticeable twang and wore a lot of western stuff, both things that I inherited, but nowadays that’s not only been lost but totally forgotten, even my brother who’s only 4 years younger than me has a totally different and much more stereotypical SoCal accent, and I get asked where I’m from all the time.

As for hats, the confidence definitely matters a lot, but so does knowing when it’s appropriate to wear them, and what kind of hat you wear. If you’re going around wearing a brand new black Stetson Skyline in the middle of a summer day you’re gonna look like an awkward LARPer no matter what you do, but on the flipside I’ve got a beat up old reshaped silverbelly Resistol that I wear on cold and rainy days and it gets me nothing but compliments and has even gotten me laid at least once.

ye I already wear boots for my casual fit pretty much every day. bootcut jeans too. don’t particularly like western shirts or jackets so I go with a kind of contemporary western fit like pic rel but like you said I haven’t mustered up the courage to wear a hat yet.
Thought about getting this hat recently: https://superduperhats.com/collections/wandermate/products/wandermate-wood?variant=47804004204878

Sure if you are a tall muscular Chad. People will compliment you on the hat and women will fantasize about the hot cowboy you are. If you are. Jameel scrawny incel you will be labeled a weirdo ,tryhard ,stupid and will be relentlessly mocked and bullied by everyone until you know your place and get the most nondescript clothes you can so you existence can be ignored by civil society as easy as possible

what’s the cutoff for tall muscular Chad?

I’m 181cm and 75kg lean. People generally compliment my Western wear. I’ve never heard a joke at my expense, and I genuinely go double denim in a city every day.

Sounds like you are tall enough, just wear boots to boost your height and gain some more muscle if you can. I think you are hat approved

    • Anonymous says:

you just have to be a chad. tall can help compensate if you’re not a chad but its not required. guy’s never seen a mexican in the south before they all wear cowboy hats pull it off and are like 5’4.

It pretty much always looks bad. People will give you a pass if you’re from cowboy country, but otherwise, it’s just a bit cringey.

I wear a straw hat during summer and I don’t give a heck how gaygy it looks
it’s functional and does its job very well
people would sometimes laugh or make jokes about it, but it never felt like an insult, more like genuine awe
and ffs I can’t find a single pic where the model isn’t wearing a purse, guess it’s for gays indeed

I wear an outback hat pretty much all summer. I also live in flyover western USA and work in agriculture tech, so it’s not at all unusual.

This. "Outback" style hats are the perfect hybrid of cowboy and fedora. You can dress them up (new black leather, fancy band, maybe a feather) or go super casual (beat up with work clothes.)
It’s really about what you do tho. I’m a truck driver, so it works. I wear a boonie style hat in the heat, and ushankas in the cold. If I’m not at work I tend to just go with basic b***h hats or none at all.
I honestly don’t care what people think. Keeping the sun and rain off my face is important, and fur is amazing in the cold. The fact that I stand out and am noticable is an afterthought.

      >Tall, muscular
I’m 6’1" in boots and fat, but broad shouldered and carry it well. If I can pull it off, I imagine you can. Regular push ups go a long way.

Straw hat in the summer is fine on anyone. Don’t wear a real cowboy hat unless you rope and ride and for the love of god do not wear a black hat unless you’re a badass and ready to prove it.

      • Anonymous says:

Black hat and/or black boots are for bad men. Black hat gets a pass in the grey cool winter weather if you’re actually working but if you show up to a dancehall or bar in a black cowboy hat and there’s real cowboys there you better be ready

        • Anonymous says:

Sounds larpy and gay. Only cowboy hat i have was a gift and im not gonna buy myself one. If someone wants to fight me over that theyll just look like the gay they are

        • Anonymous says:

I don’t understand. What’s anger-inducing about seeing a black hat, even with the "bad guy" association?
What exactly are they going to think when they see a guy wearing a black hat? That he’s a criminal? That he’s disrespecting them?
          Please explain.

Maybe this is regional or something, I’ve never heard of it and black is by far the most common color for cowboy hats.

I live in Southern California. It is not uncommon to see people wearing western cowboy hats, even when not in towns with lots of horse owners like Norco or Menifee. By grandfather wore a black felt stetson hat all the time.

I’m talking about Western cowboy hats, though. I wouldn’t touch fedora. It’s reputation has been too tainted, have never seen anyone wear one within the past decade.

fedoras are fine the hat everyone actually hates is the trillby

Is this a fedora or a trilby?

Cowboy hats are usually cool, but I’ll chime in on the fedora VS. trilby dilemma. Trilby is a British usage largely used for fedora, no matter how wide or narrow, but in America, trilby often refers to shorter/narrow brimmed hats one sees in most of the more mocked photos on the internet. I would avoid going for an especially short brimmed hat unless one knows what they are doing, going for some sort of a beatnik, mod, ska, reggae, or early skinhead impression from the middle of the 20th century. Narrow brimmed hats are also fine and proper for the latter 1950s and 1960s businessman look, think of how that looked on the series Mad Men. On the other hand, while narrow hats look a little more casual, the moderate and wider brim widths of fedora hats may be a little too formal for certain modern outfits, and just not congruent with particular styles around today, especially athletic-inspired ones. Try to be in decent physical shape and wear at least decently-fitting clothes, and you may be OK to wear a hat without looking like an internet mockup, but all the better if one is in better physical shape and has well-fitting clothing, alongside a hat that pairs well with one’s facial shape.

      functional?

      • Anonymous says:

If you actually need its function, like the people whose jobs and uniforms require it, then yes.
If you don’t, then it’s not functional to you and you’re basically just larping for aesthetics, much like if you decided to start walking around with a hazmat suit (something that exists for functional reasons but isn’t functional to you).

Obviously it’s not black and white but a gradient.
The more utility it has for you (like simply protecting you from the sun) has to be weighed against how strong it’s associated with a particular job/activity/culture/etc.
A cowboy hat can be useful to anyone in the world who wants to be in the sun but if you’re not the kind of person who’s associated with it you’re going to look like you’re just wearing it for aesthetics and larping.

I don’t know what I’m saying and my head hurts so don’t listen to anything I said. I’ll check back tomorrow to see if any of this makes any sense.

nah you say that but people like you will always find a reason why actually youre not authentic enough to wear something

          • Anonymous says:

Almost everything we wear is inauthentic to some extent, and everyone has a different threshold for what constitutes "too inauthentic".
Most people are fine with wearing jeans even if you’re an office worker, but they would laugh at someone dressing in a fireman uniform (helmet and everything) in their daily life.
It’s up to you to choose if a given item is too "alien" for a given person.

            >people like you
This is not an argument. You don’t know anything about me other than the two small paragraphs I wrote above, which is far from enough to get even the vaguest idea about my opinions and mentality.

I graduated from an EMT program in the big city and moved to a super rural, farmer valley area to practice.

As a parting gift, my parents bought me a cowboy hat as a joke. I’m required to buy steeltoe boots so I actually found a place that does steeltoe cowboy boots.

So that’s what I wear to work as an EMT. My coworkers and I think it’s hilarious, and we usually get anything from indifference to surprise from the patients.
