Why do black sneakers have a bad reputation?

Until recently, I didn’t even have a clue that black sneakers were considered inappropriate and if so, only appropriate for a very small group of wearers; I thought they were unremarkable and neutral.

And after a few weeks of musing, I still don’t know why that should be. I would like to know the origin or if this is no longer reconstructible at least hear your theories about why a black sneaker is such an absurdity.

      >They heck up the weight of an outfit
What kind of weight and what makes them do that?

      >they’re heavy and bold
      Why?

      >and do not compliment most fits
Why? One thing I’ve been told frequently about colors is that black is a neutral color that goes with anything.

Weight is a design principle, it’s a visual force that attracts the eye of the viewer. The greater the force, the more the eye is attracted, thus suggesting where you should look next. Contrast imparts weight hence black being very heavy and bold, it’s like gravity for your eyes. If you’re working exclusively with color theory black is indeed neutral but in fashion you also want to create hierarchy, flow, rhythm and balance in your outfit. A strong eye pull at the very bottom of the fit messes all of that up, it throws the balance off and makes it appear bottom heavy, taking attention away from the rest of what you’re wearing.

But why should this be black and not white or red, it looks quiet arbitrarily to me like someone said it once and all other copied from him his pov.

It’s because of the way in which our eyes and our brain’s pattern recognition functions. It’s not a rule someone made up and long time ago and everybody stuck to because they think that’s what’s supposed to look good. There’s quite a bit to explain but there is a scientific basis to it, I’d suggest reading up on different design principles.

By this logic are white sneakers the least focal? This doesn’t sound like a practical principal, if I wear black sneakers with black jeans and a red shirt the focal point will obviously be the shirt. Whether a color is bold depends entirely on context.

you are correct. red is the heaviest weight color. yellow is the lightest. there’s also more to weight than just color and contrast. people spend years learning about this stuff in fashion school, it’s not just mumbo jumbo, learning it will help you out with your fits a lot.

people associate dark/black shoes with dress shoes and not sneakers

wearing sports/casual gear with black shoes will, at a quick glance, give out you’re a stupid with dress shoes on.
People in general subconsciously know this and so avoid black sneakers naturally… unless you’re an autist

            >when autists give some autistic explanation for why people dont wear black sneakers and call everyone else autistic for not understanding
            >thinks its any deeper than "its ugly"

This is why white sneakers have their purpose. I don’t have any white dress shoes. Sneakers are more casual and should use more casual colors. Browns and blacks should be reserved to boots and dress shoes.

Dress shoes should be shined and no color of leather is gonna shine like black leather. I can’t say that about sneakers.

If you are unable to articulate why a good outfit is good and why a bad outfit is bad outside of “just cuz”, then you have no right to call yourself fashionable.

Those are the Onitsuka Tiger – Lawnship.

I already made once a thread about them asking were to get them or a sneaker with a similar design because the original Lawnships aren’t sold anylonger but instead the successors Lawnship 2.0 and 3.0 which look bulky and design-wise more like common projects which I personally don’t like.

Don’t waste your money, they’re genuine leather and will end up looking thrashed very quickly. Save up the money for a pair of full grain leather sneakers and you’ll be much happier with your purchase.

I know the difference, but from my experience it doesn’t make such a difference in reality, also design is more important to me than the quality of leather, why would I choose an ugly design with great leather over a great design with a lesser quality of leather which nonetheless is good enough for me and gives me years of wear – I wouldn’t want to wear full grain leather crocks, also the price of the onitsuka tiger lawnships was sold usually btw 50 and 90 bucks and were good enough quality to me, the sneakers in your picture, i suppose common projects, have an ugly boxy design with a much too high outsole, they look less refined and more away from the anatomy of the feet, I simply don’t like it and wouldn’t want them for free, or I would want them for free to gift them to so who likes them.

I have black/white nikes. Is this an imbalance that will destroy all my future fits? I’m thinking about owning only yellow shoes from now on since yellow means the sun and people subconsciously know the sun is good this my shoes are good 🙂

More than half the sneakers I’ve bought in the past 5 or so years were all black, I put white laces on a skated pair with ripped laces a few weeks back and they look so good

Those look good, but what’s a good fit with them? An all black fit would make them look like cheap dress shoes like everyone’s saying

all black shoes are kinda shit, black sneakers should be like margiela gats with different materials or paneling to look good

Black sneakers are strongly associated with low-tier service workers. It’s just like how white sneakers are considered basic b***h shoes, or boots are "reddit". Just put a little more effort into your fit so you don’t look like a dishwasher/boring dork/soi goblin.
