i once ran out of v-necks (because i hadn’t washed white clothes for a while) and just went with a crew neck under my button up, and a friend of mine immediately told me i look like an old man with that. so even if you don’t mind, others seem to notice quite quickly, even though it might just be a bit superficial women who do.
It is ok in the same situations that unbuttoning the top buttons of your shirt is. That is if you are not an immature little boy.
