not op i wear western stuff sometimes despite having no connection to southern culture. i did construction and forestry all through my 20’s until i hecked my back up. its close enough in vibe that i don’t feel or look out of place in it.

Yeah, cowboy culture as in the lone desperado gun slinger was a Hollywood creation. Cowboy as in guy that’s paid to work ranches and move cattle existed long before Hollywood did.

Do you have any experience on farms, in horse boarding facilities, with motors, pumps, or construction? If so, you can pretty much just call up family owned ranches in the Western states and see if they need work and offer housing. They post jobs online now. If you have no experience at all, then you need to get some by volunteering.

Those are the only 2 ways, but if you can do that, you can successful work sunrise to sunset everyday with no days off with illegal Mexicans for $5/day like the real cowboys.

i see more black and mexican guys in cowboy attire than white guys, where i am.
i found this black cowboy fashion youtuber who pulls it off while looking for pics of starched jeans a while ago: https://www.youtube.com/@BestDressedCowboy
and this guy’s been around on the denimbro forums forever https://www.youtube.com/@sticksbegrowin625/featured but he does more of a workwear americana but modern fit vibe.
for some examples of it being pulled off.

Some blacks working the railyard in Cheyenne, WY wear cowboy hats and dusters and they didn’t look out of place when I saw them

buy rustlers instead of wranglers. they’re the exact same fit as cowboy cuts but without the cowboy-ish details like the exposed rivets. in an amazing-for-the-price 15oz non selvedge right hand twill denim. raws are walmart.com exclusive online only. 1 wash is carried in store. black only comes in 1 wash but fades beautifully.

i hot soak 30’s down to 29 but you can find down to 27’s by getting dead stock vintage ones on ebay. they typically don’t command more than like 20 dollars and even the selvedge ones can be had around 30.

Which style of rustlers would be similar to the high waisted cowboy cut wranglers? I went to the walmart site and they have regular fit, relaxed fit, classic relaxed fit, and some other stuff

      • Anonymous says:

all the rustler jeans are the exact same cuts as the cowboy cut line. but one of the two relaxed cuts in wrangler’s cowboy cut line the 47mwz is their levi’s 505 competitor jean so its a mid rise and fits completely different from the other cowboy cuts. oddball one. good fit on some guys though. fits like levi’s but gives you the wrangler seat fit.

rustler regular fit = 13mwz original fit cowboy cut jeans
rustler boot cut = 945 cowboy cut boot jean
rustler relaxed fit = probably 47mwz performance cowboy cut… might be 31mwz relaxed cowboy cut…*
rustler relaxed fit classic = 31mwz relaxed cowboy cut**
there are also 935 cowboy cut slim boot jean equivalents and some 80s tapered stuff and some other random shit deadstock on ebay/depop/etc.

if anyone reading needs info on the cowboy cut fits consult the above chart and this plebbit guide on the wrangler cowboy cut product line: https://old.reddit.com/r/rawdenim/comments/194ee7m/quick_and_dirty_guide_to_rigid_wrangler_cuts/
        he doesn’t cover rustler though.

*the wal mart website is REALLLLLY not descriptive enough to tell if its 31mwz or 47mwz for sure. i bought my dad a pair of those i’ll ask him later and post which one it is. you’ve triggered my ’tism.
**WAY cheaper on amazon/ebay than walmart for some reason

shit thanks anon this is extremely helpful
I was hoping to get some Cowboy cut jeans soon but they’re a bit expensive for me to order online without trying them, and I can’t find anywhere that sells them near me, but the rustlers are at least cheap enough to try out and even if they don’t fit great I can just use them as work pants. thanks again

any 1960 or earlier repro jeans will also have that sort of fit but with a more generic jeans/workwear jeans vibe to them. except you won’t get the wrangler butt. the seat design on levi’s repros isn’t nearly as bad as modern jeans but not nearly as good as wrangler. might be better for small ass guys too.

    sorry not hot soak
how you want to do it is run it 1-2x through the washing machine on hot setting low/no spin. add a towel or two to the wash and flip them inside out so they don’t marble or crease.
if you really want to be autistic and retain max indigo do a hot bathtub soak but you need to do it like fill tub with scalding water –> soak 5 mins -> drain, repeat a bunch of times so it spends 30-60 mins in hot water. soaking normally
then tumble dry them inside out max heat. <- key step and won’t ruin them
they measure 29 afterwards and my waist stretches them back to like 29.5 (i’m about a 27"-28" waist depending on the day)

  4. Anonymous says:

also key to know: the waist band does not stretch back as much if you make sure to always wear a belt with them.

If you skip the hat and cowboy boots its a pretty normal 40-50 year old men’s outfit. Just sub in some Iron Rangers and a rustic baseball cap and make it a more general americana outfit.

    • Anonymous says:

      >rustic baseball cap
ebay and all those second hand sites like depop are chock full of 100% wool made in usa 6 panel baseball caps for like $15-40 depending on brand and condition btw. i was shopping for those the other day and passed on so many good ones.
plain & with teams (usually non liscence historic teams)
it can be hard to source new + good ones these days. a lot of the brands like ebbets who make classic ball caps are getting bought out by fnatics and going to shit (rip local company)

Literally just do it. I was walking around Bayfield eating whitefish livers and looking like this and later on in the night I had a great drunken conversation in the men’s bathroom with some cat from Duluth who was like, "I gotta say I recognize ya from earlier – ya gotta be the only cowboy walkin around up here in the Northwoods." Told me all about how him and his wife had been coming there for their anniversary for the last 30 years.

Christ you’ve fallen off the rails since I last saw you in western threads back in 2021 lmao hell, you look like what Bo Burnham looked like back then
Your short hair and clean shave suited you far more.

If you don’t want to look LARPy, you can use certain pieces and more modern styles to have some cowboy aesthetic without actually being a cowboy aesthetic. This is what a lot of dude bros in the Mountain West do. If you live out there or if you hunt out there, you meet these guys. They’re usually into hunting. They wear a lot of stuff from brands like First Lite and Sitka but Filson is especially great for this.

Get a nice chore coat, white tee or button up shirt, some worn in jeans or waxed canvas pants and some boots. It’s that easy, full brim hat is optional.

I had been working on it. My grandpa was a caballero for real. My dad and I worked outside. Basically if you work the trades you can wear the cowboy. Wear 501’s or boot cut jeans. Wear at least ankle high boots cause no one sees above your ankle. Don’t wear boots that click like women. Wear cowboy hats only on special occasions. Bomber jackets with that felt. Wear a belt.

Probably depends a great deal on location, but here in central WA agriculture is a big part of the local economy and cowboy shit is pretty mainstream. Wrangler jeans and Ariat boots are basic men’s workwear. I avoid wearing rodeo buckle belts and ten gallon hats because I work in tree fruit and row crops rather than cattle, but realistically I could probably pull it off pretty easily. Basically just be rural American or at least have some respect for the culture.

Don’t go full western just yet
    >plain Ts
    >solid jeans, no fake distress
    >proper leather boots
    >proper leather belt to match
    >plain shirt
    >muted tone work jacket
Trucker cut jackets works well on slimmer frames. If you opt for a denim overshirt make sure you know what colours work with your pants, and, just like the pants, don’t buy a distressed or stone washed denim. Also if you opt for a plaid/flannel shirt go for the larger pattern, the small pattern will look top busy. Simplicity is the key here.
DO NOT get a cowboy belt or buckle or waist cost or trenchcoat or anything like that. Stick to the simple styles that give off, not just a cowboy energy, but an aura of practicality.

      >Trucker cut jackets works well on slimmer frames
type ii pattern jacket works on every body type, its a lot more democratic than the trucker jacket. you won’t find cheap fast fashion type iis but you shouldn’t be giving money to third world countries anyways.

Denim isn’t that warm, unless you mean for a fleece or sheepskin lined jacket, but even then you have to take into account that OP is asking for advice which means he probably isn’t fashion navy enough to know how to pull off a denim coat

    >How do you pull off dressing like a cowboy without actually being a cowboy?
By dressing like an 80’s guy
    >highrise bootcut jeans
    >western metal tipped belt
    >cowboy boots (MUST be J or snip toe, NO roper heel)
You’re done, wear whatever you want on top, tucked is bonus points but untucked is fine too. Even though you’re wearing three pieces of westernwear they’re all flattering and inoffensive pieces, they’re things nobody will notice until they actually look at you and they end up liking and they’ll say you either look like you’re from the 70’s or 80’s or you look like a cowboy
