i was too old for that shit and all my friends weren't into that. we were into demo scene, console gaming etc. we'd link up consoles but that was as much as we could give a fuck about. some dudes would have their PCs playing quake/doom/unreal tournament (god i loved that game). some dudes still had amigas as well.

              Anonymous

Your doc is kind of a lightweight, probably brown and/or a woman. The healthy amount of alcohol you can binge each weekend without becoming an alcoholic is officially a standard 12 pack of American piss beer. Doing the math:

              12cans * 355mL * 5%alcohol = 213 mL of ethanol

              You were drinking:
              300mL * 40% alcohol = 120mL of alcohol
              213-120 = 93mL left

              93/x mL = 0.4 -> 93/0.4 =232.5mL ~ 23.3cl

So, with 30cl drank, you still had about 23 cl to go before it would be considered sad. So drink up friend.

Thanks. Can't do it anymore, idk why. Get headache and sleepy for 16 hours after 0.5 beer. So it's just so not worth it, losing half of a weekend to it.

Sad, those were good times. People actually had valid reasons and longing to be around eachother. We had cookouts in this one computer shop we partied at every weekend.
Usually on tap we had some COD2, CS 1.7, Some Quake 3. Sometimes people just had the latest singleplayer game and we all got in on checking it out.
We had a massive on-site storage drive full of pirated software, anyone could grab an iso of just about anything and install it. Played just about everything.

      I miss CRTs in general

        Anonymous

I don't, and I still keep a very high end CRT at home.
The only feature of CRTs we won't be able to replicate is arbitrary resolution.
They've been surpassed in every other metric by other technologies.

          Anonymous

what surpassed motion performance? every modern technology is blurry as fuck in motion unless it strobes, and that gives me a headache.

            Anonymous

OLED has an almost instant response time.
CRTs can blur when a bright object is moving across a black background, it was always apparent just moving the mouse cursor on a black background.
The phosphorous has to have some amount of persistence. And it's not like a CRT at 100Hz doesn't have detectable flicker, because it sure has.

            >have technology like ultra thin gaming laptop, thunderbolts graphics cards
            >no more LAN party or even LAN games in recent years

My gaming buddies from HS all moved out our hometown and have families now.
We used to play online until about 7-8 years ago, but we stopped doing that too.
The pic is from 2007 btw, it's not even from that long ago. The first LAN parties we did were in 2003 when we finally got our own gaming PCs by saving lunch money.

              Anonymous

I preferred my CRT to my oled

                Anonymous

There are plenty of annoyances with CRTs that I just don't want to put up with any more.
The ever present flyback transformer whine, the ever changing geometry, the slow warm up time, low contrast in a well lit environment and low brightness in general, high reflectivity etc. etc.
And I only switched to LCD in 2011, I held out for as long as I could.

I'm an oldfag, I remember going to Best Buy in the 90s and seeing these two girls scream at their dad that they hate computers and wanted to leave. And as evident by the pictures in OP girls were not into gaming and not into computers AT ALL. So why the FUCK would a girl act like this the halcyon days of computing when the only thing girls did with computers was use Word Perfect?

Most zoomers who have computers these days have laptops that are more than capable of running current day esports games as well as a lot of older games. Nothing stops them from getting together in the same room and just playing those games together while drinking a beer or two. Hell, it's way easier for them practically speaking than it ever was for us. Laptops back in the day sucked for gaming and we had to haul our desktop PCs to the location.

I don't see what there is to romanticize - I had LAN parties almost every weekend throughout middle school and early high-school, the difference being we were all using shitty windows laptops rather than PCs and were playing modded Minecraft and CS:S instead of Quake. There is this tendency to assume strict generational cultural boundaries: anyone born after x year didn't experience y thing.

It fills me with nostalgia, rage, and regret. I was 16/17 when I went in the early 2000s.

Nostalgia for the surreptiously shared drive with porn, pirated games, and movies. Also getting infected by fucking Nimda thanks to enabling file sharing in the first place.
Also nostalgia for UT2003/4, Desert Combat, CS 1.6, and much more.

Rage at the shitpile that modern gaming has become. No more LAN support. No more fun mods. Instead it's ladders, centralized servers, games that can be shutdown one week to be replaced with an inferior version (Overwatch)

Regret that zoomies can never experience the early 2000s internet in its prime. Regret that Lan parties will never come back in their classic form.

it's simple: corporations wanted people to always be online and play over the internet so the corporations could govern every aspect of the game and how you play it, just to milk more shekels out of players and also to fine tune the game to fuck you harder.

I wish LAN pc cafe's were a thing in my country. I'd love to go to a random PC cafè and find a bunch of people playing CS on LAN or something and just hop into their game and start shittalking each other and shooting shit knowing that we're all in the same room, even if most of them would probably be strangers.
Did LAN parties as a kid, but it's not feasible anymore. Nobody wants to when they can just play online, people got lazy. If it was already a big thing at PC cafès though, maybe. There's none here though.

When you are young you don't know shit about how stuff works
A lot of them probably don't know there is such thing as "piracy" and torrents, for example
LAN parties happened because people were looking for a way to play videogames together. Maybe they had an internet connection but it was shit. That prompted them to find a better way. The social aspect of sharing the same room playing videogames is a consequence of that. People realized that it's a better time when you put in the effort to get together after the fact, but the original goal was always to play games with your friends. Zoomers can do it easily with their stable fiber internet. They have never had the problem that led to LAN get togethers. Therefore the idea won't cross their mind unless they hear about it somewhere.

        Anonymous

it's not just the games, either
there's also the "party" part of lan party as well
not to mention all the downtime spend sharing files, nowadays i can download anything i want quickly from a torrent, but back when most people i knew used dialup, being able to connect everyone's computer to a 100Mbit/s hub and use DC to copy files between ourselves was a way faster way to get stuff
playing multiplayer games was really only one facet of lan parties
