I'm not that deep into shred stuff but isn't he basically the best to ever do it? And out of what I heard I like some of it melodically and musically. I've also liked what Racer X I've heard too.
Not even fucking close. Even Jason fucking Becker said all his music sounds the same. He pretty much just writes using Harmonic minor in a few keys. Been playing the same fucking riffs for 40 years. He has a bach complex but he sounds like bach for poor people. You can only call him the best if you add many qualifiers
He is the best guitarist >of the early 80s >in neo classical metal style >who plays exclusively harmonic minor >on a fender
Yeah with all those you can call him the "best". Steve Vai would embarass him
Jason used to be a huge Malmsteen fan. And Jasons Perpetual Burn album is much more interesting and musical (and impressive technically) than anything Malmsteen has ever done.
Malmsteen only listens to his own music and Bach and it reflects in his writing.
He is a poor mans imitation of bach though. He could never write a fugue for example. If he isnt noodling in his fav keys he is lost. His philharmomic shit was embarassingly bad
>Steve Vai would embarass him
Wouldn't really agree with that considering how Vai consistently butchered the Alcatrazz stuff live.
Steve is 1000000x more musical and technical. Theres tons of guitarist from the 80s who were better. If we branch out of hair metal into other Genres, Yngwie becomes even more of a joke. He cant hold a candle to people like Frank Gambale or Al Di Meola
yngwie upstages vai and satch on G3 tour there are countless videos on youtube confirming this
Maybe if you are a fat 12 year old who thinks playing 2 note per string wankery fast is impressive, yeah

Do you mean Blackmore? Half of Yngwie's output is basically just imitating Purple and Rainbow.
Also Vai's not all that great, I saw him live at the MacAlpine benefit and he got absolutely mogged by Gilbert and Kotzen.

No Ive actually read an interview from him where he admits to only listening to his old music and bach. Hes completely detached from reality. He has no idea how much the guitar has evolved
Your feelings on vai are not whats important. He is several times better than Yngwie. More technical, more musical, more interesting. Vai was just an example. Theres dozens of guitar players better
I don't think anyone else comes close to his as far as pure shred ability goes. Jason Becker before the ALS was probably closest. Michael Angelo Batio is comparable as far as pure technical ability but MAB couldn't make a listenable song to save his life. Yngwie is repetitive but has a few gems
Lmfao you dont know shit dude. Pure shred ability? You mean 3 note per string harmonic minor runs with sweeps??? Look up Yngwie songs right now youll see poor brazilians and children nailing his songs. You want shred? Look up Paul Gilbert.
Here Ill leave you a gift, Paul writes a duet with Yngwie despite Yngwie not being present. Paul nails it and writed a better song than yngwie could
Shawn Lane probably has the most ridiculous chops of any guitar player of the last 40 years, though it's probably not really fair to lump him in with the '80s shred guys since he was more based in jazz fusion. Chris Impellitteri was a good writer and had raw speed in spades but was sloppy as hell.

He's a liar, read Anders Tenger's book on him - you need to remember that Yngwie is fucking crazy. Just about every musician who he works with has said that auditioning for him consists of jamming Purple for hours and he'll literally attack you if you call him out on anything. Seriously, John Macaluso shares a good anecdote about Yngwie jumping up and kicking him in the chest as hard as he called out Yngwie when he came in on too early on Lazy one time during rehearsals.
Also I'm

Are there any fugues on guitar? It might sound a bit messy with electric guitars
I'm not that deep into shred stuff but isn't he basically the best to ever do it? And out of what I heard I like some of it melodically and musically. I've also liked what Racer X I've heard too.

He's fucking crazy, but to his credit he kickstarted the whole neo-classical shred thing. Yeah, the later Shrapnel guys like Gilbert and MacAlpine could rip cleaner and faster but by their own admission they wouldn't have been the same players if Yngwie didn't come up with that whole Blackmore/Roth on meth thing. Also he was a good writer, from Alcatrazz until Odyssey he had a pretty consistent run of good melodic metal albums.
I love some Yngwie but I'm probably a Malmcasual since I really mostly listen to the shit that has vocals. This album is so good, just pure classic heavy metal, Trilogy is also great and sort of proto Euro PM.
He always had great vocals on his early solo stuff.
>Jeff Scott Soto >Mark Boals >Joe Lynn Turner
Three of the best hard rock and metal vocals of the '80s, but he was too much of an egomaniac to make it work. Even later on he had some good ones like Mats Levens, but later on when the money dried up he had mediocre ones (Doogie White) or ones who didn't fit at all (Ripper Owens).
One thing I think elevates Malmsteen above most of the other 80s shred guys is that he actually could write good songs in a band context. A few of the others like Gilbert and Friedman could but MacAlpine, Householder, Vinnie Moore, Becker and so on couldn't write an actual good song to save their lives.
As the focus increased on technicality, a lot of the emphasis on actual songwriting went out the window. It's why the early stuff like EVH and George Lynch is better than 95% of what Shrapnel Records ever released.
I dont get one thing about peoples opinions on yngwie. People either defend him or really despise him.
I mean hes got some really good songs, some bad ones, he obviously used to play pretty fast and pretty good. I always liked his cockiness and confidence, but thats me. He is neither the best guitarist or the best composer ever but really who gives a shit?
To me no electric guitar player is even close to actual guitar players when it comes to musicianship.
This convo started in reference to a leaked audio of Yngwie throwing a bitchfit on a plane and at one point in the vid he says something like "im the best guitarist in the world"
He thinks hes the best and his syncophants are all 12 year old retards who just heard Black Star for the first time
I don't really care about shredder wars anyway, Yngwie has some really good music, that's all I really care about....I like solos if they're energetic and melodic, that's about the extent of me giving a fuck since I don't play guitar.
Then you have the whole "guitar solos = bad" in general people who sometimes shit up any thread about Yngwie or EVH or any of the couple big name guitar guys they've ever heard of.
>In an interview with Guitar World back in 1994, Malmsteen reacted to Metallica’s “Master Of Puppets” song saying they were good, but their guitarist Kirk Hammett wasn’t: “I’m not saying I influenced them, but maybe I did (In the interview he said that Metallica had his early demos). Overall, the band has a great sound. But I think the lead guitar player (Kirk Hammett) is not very good.”
>“He can play fast and is pretty good at it. But his choice of notes and sense of pitch are very bad. I don’t think that he plays with musicality, or plays in tune. Rather than lifting the song, his solo seems to be the anticlimax.”

I think Eric Johnson was faster. He had some insane scale runs and arpeggios. Also Shawn Lane mogs him.
I'm not that deep into shred stuff but isn't he basically the best to ever do it? And out of what I heard I like some of it melodically and musically. I've also liked what Racer X I've heard too.
