How do autofags work on their cars without car lifts?
Britbong looking at buying a new house in the next 6 months, not sure if I can realistically get away with just something like jackstands or if I really will need a garage for a car lift.
Plan on participating in local racing leagues, so will have to be wrenching often.
Can you even drop a tranny without a lift without massive hassle?
if you arent morbin' you can fit under a car with jackstands
Sure, i'm no American. Can always get a lift to bring an engine out the top rather than dropping it out the bottom, but was just more worried about the hassle of working on exhaust/trans/etc.
I'm probably overthinking it though honestly, jackstands will probably be enough.
what kind of work? trying to weld an exhaust on jackstands would be pretty difficult, most cars you can take the engine + trans out from the top, i have used a cherry picker for the infamous gm subframe drop though
Shit I'm like 310 and I can get under a Probe on jackstands pretty easily. I did the oil change on one of them and almost could get under it without the jackstand
my car is slammed on the god damn floor, i constantly get underneath it on uneven surfaces, and scrape on flat roads. it is not a pain in the ass to lift a car up if you invest in a nice 3ton+ floor jack and carry it with you everywhere. (and some motor oil just in case) scissor jacks are more “convenient” but they are prone to folding under the weight of the car and unthreading themselves (flattening YOU in the process)
don’t be a bitch and carry a floor jack with you. it will save your ass. i really mean that.
im renting part of a shop with 4 other track guys so i have lift access now
How'd you meet them? Already friends, or just meet them at the track?
they posted up that they had a vacancy in the shop on facebook
they have room in the shop's yard for a trailer so ill be getting my own soon too. no more uhaul
oh i forgot to add we all drive with the same track group we just never met. dont think id trust this setup otherwise tbh
>Can you even drop a tranny without a lift ?
Yes
>without massive hassle?
No
I've never needed the lift for work on cars even when I removed the tranaxle out of my 944 I just used plastic ramps and it was good enough
>944
My first love
Wish they weren't so slow bless
They sure as fuck are not slow in the corners
i wouldn't trust plastic ramps personally. seems really unsafe
i once left one of my projects “sitting” on them for months. i can’t speak for all but those rhino ramps are really fucking strong. i contemplated sleeping underneath there once too. (lying down underneath your shitbox is way too comforting)
Disgusting.
90% of the work that NEEDS doing you can do without a lift, lift just makes it easier.
For everything that DOES need a lift, I go to a hobby garage where I can rent a lift for like 10 euros an hour
>Can you even drop a tranny without a lift without massive hassle
Depends on the car, but....
If you're going to be buying your own place and you want to focus on wrenching & mechanical work going forward then I very stronlgly suggest getting something with a proper garage where you can place a lift. It will make life so, so much easier
I've competed in my local track scene and still go to the pits at my local figure 8 track. All those guys just use jackstands, and they certainly don't have the money for a proper lift, nor could they bring one to the track when they need to fix things in the pits. A lift would be nice, but it's not mandatory for wrenching. The entry is $70 for two pairs of jackstands.
ive seen some guys bring quickjacks but yeah you have to be able to fix your shit in the paddock
im old and my back hurts fucking around with a car without a lift so ill take that to help me do more
you plan on wrenching for racing and you have so little wrenching experience you dont know how to work on a car?
sounds like you should just find someone that knows what they are doing. not necessarily a shop, but at least an old timer thats an enthusiast that has the tools and experience.
if you have these questions with the possibility of dropping a tranny you will 100% just hurt yourself or your poor victim of a car
I know some people who have an outdoor lift.
All you need is a slab of concrete.
Hydraulic lifts can easily handle outdoor conditions.
>You can get a large tent in case its raining.
Or man up and build a proper workshop.
In case you cant get permission the temporary solution might be something.
i just bought a new car after not owning one for years and have to wait afew days before i can rwgister it and have it inspected, what are basic things i can do and check on like the oil and etc?
obviously im a wrenchlet but i want to start working on vehicles myself so i dont to depend so much on mechanics and get ripped off
youtube.

The mental LARP begins. Next you will buy a miata that has failed MOT, and dick around attempting "track mods" before shelling out £5000 at a shop. Track date 2030
hey now homosexual don’t go around spreading my very real story everywhere
