Would a 2011 MacBook Pro still be usable in 2023? The design is nice and I want something with an optical drive.

why? there's literally no point. you don't need one.

only if you want to get laughed out of the cafe when you pop that creaky thing open lmao
it's 2023. the oldest you can go is 2018 before they assume you're homeless and show you out. if you want to appear to be a functioning member of society and not some weirdo deviant, no older than 2020, please.

I know this is bait but the average person can’t even tell the difference between most laptops because they haven’t changed appearance in a decade. They all copy eachother because modern tech companies have no creative ability, so from a few feet away any laptop looks the same.

I disagree. Normies have developed the ability to count the number of cameras in people's iPhones to let them judge others on their consoomer level. They do the same with macbook by looking at the thickness. The slimmer it is, the better in their eyes.

They're gonna have some problems because the M2 Macbooks are thiccer than the Intel models from 3 years ago

          1. You don’t usually have your retarded phone out and upside down or pointing at people for them to “count” how many cameras your phone has. That makes no fucking sense unless it’s a selfish photo.

          2. No. People are not that great judges of size of scale especially if they don’t have something to compare side by side. besides that, the average person doesn’t have the money to get the “thinnest” computer or the most recent thing. Even at a bar lots of women I talk to just have generic looking phones. I don’t believe the average consumer is as ridiculously obsessed with your tech gadgets that they can eyeball it and know it’s old let alone what brand it even is half the time.

I’ve seen people (mainly graphic designers) still use them so yes. Just max the RAM, throw in an SSD, maybe replace the battery if you wanna keep it portable, it’s still good, specially if you get it for under $200 + $100 of upgrades
Maybe you could get it up to Catalina without hiccups.

Don't listen to these homosexuals anon. Buy it, put Snow Leopard in it and enjoy a life of Offline goodness. Sure, you won't be able to use the latest and greatest browser, but you will enjoy things like:
    >backups
    >burning music to CDs
    >editing photos
    >development if you set up a shitty home server with Debian in it and SSH to it
    >unlimited stability
    >etc

    You can thank me later

As long as you stick with the 13" models, they're fairly reliable and they run Linux pretty well. Windows 10 also runs smoothly. But I'm not sure why you would bother with either of those when they're both inferior experiences to a Thinkpad from that era, and when the Macbooks really shine best with OSX.

Personally, I have a 2009 Aluminum Macbook that I use for managing my iTunes library. Snow Leopard is really the peak of Mac OS, super comfy to use offline, and sort of the last iteration that was entirely focused on the local computer.

I don't even think the Late 2011 Macbooks will run 10.6, the minimum OS is 10.7.

    >Would a 2011 MacBook Pro still be usable in 2023?
Yes. Only the 13” though. The 15 and 17 have a dGPU that is doomed to fail. I mean truly doomed, like 2005 Xbox 360 tier failure rate. You can fallback to the iGPU with some command line config editing but it’s not great. If you insist on 15”, go 2012. There was no 17” 2012, so if you insist on 17”, go 2010.

A capacitor in the GPU VRM likes to fail causing instability. 2009 should be the most reliable unibody. Every fucking macbook has some common enough to be documented board faults lmao.

Yes. Not with MacOS though. With Linux i did an entire semester of college on it, but with mac i couldn't even open a browser without waiting a few years.

I don't know if i was able to get the optical drive to work or not, but with some fandangaling it might work.

I forget if it was 2011 or 2012 but there was a year they had faulty graphics cards. Pain to fix. If it acts up you can either disable the card by booting something like arch or open it up and disconnect it.

Maybe if you install Linux on it, otherwise you'll be stuck with massively out of date OS X and lose software compatibility.

These ones are complete trash. They have an Ivy Bridge i5-3210M in it, which is fine - but their firmware configures it so that it can't even fucking turbo. Yeah, that's right, turbo is completely disabled. I have another laptop which happens to have the exact same i5-3210M and it performs significantly better because its cooling solution is actually sufficient to stay below 100c for all combined CPU+GPU loads.
Apple shitbooks are totally useless. There might be some uses cases for apple silicon macs but these intel ones are much worse than normal windows laptops.

Try and find a mid 2012 model, better GPU and still upgradable, I used opencore to run Ventura and everything works fine after letting the patcher work it's magic. Fuck the shills having an optical drive is handy when you have hardware which can only boot of cd/dvd.
