    >remake ?
After they get through the rest of their SNES catalog, maybe. They've still got Bahamut Lagoon, Chrono Trigger, Rudra no Hinou and FF5 and 6 to remake first.
If they ever do remake it, hopefully they have Kawazu project manage, as he's SE's best guy for that.

I wouldn't want a remake. First of all, 90% of the appeal of XG was the atmosphere and art style. A remake would definitely "update" the art style to be the same modern anime trash that Xenoblade 1 was turned into. That overly cutesy bobblehead look doesn't fit with any kind of serious storytelling that 90s anime could pull off. Everyone would be changed to look 12 years old.

Second, they would refuse to improve the one thing that needs to be fixed, the combat. It would be the exact same shit as the original, probably even worse since they would frick something up in the coding and make it even easier or more repetitive than the first time.

Third, they would censor the absolute soul right out of it to meet Japan's new draconian ratings standards so they can get that all-important CERO-B. All "problematic" or "sensitive" topics (which make up the bulk of the interesting bits of the story) including religious references, references to slavery or indoctrination, the entire script, would be rewritten or omitted entirely.

But the real reason we will never get a remake is that they would need to do something about the second half the game. If they remake it and the second half is still a slideshow? Commercial suicide. But fully fleshing out the second half to be the same playability of the first would be as much work as making a completely new game from scratch, since they have nothing to go on. They will never do that after seeing how much trouble it is with just FF7.

What a weird post, inventing a remake in your head that cherrypicks all the things you personally think would be the worst even when they make no sense next to each other. Like, if they were to put that much effort into overhauling the graphics that much they'd almost certainly change the gameplay as well (not even necessarily saying they'd change it in an improved way either, just the idea they'd decide to stay extremely faithful to one aspect but not the other has no logical basis).

Frankly I'm not even going to bother engaging with you on the artstyle point either despite the main character of the latest Xeno game all but turning into literally Weltall as his main gimmick because it's clear you've already made your mind up with somehow thinking 'bobblehead' is a better description of modern character models than PS1 sprites (which is not at all to disparage Xenogears' artstyle but is a baffling claim to make).

By the way I should add I don't even particularly want to see a remake because it IS astronomically easy to frick up remakes and I can count on a single hand the amount of remade games that are true improvements in every way to the original, I just think the way that post argued it is bizarre.

I kind of agree with him. Remakes that change character art to suit current trends are lame as frick.
All the main characters getting the equivalent of Korean plastic surgery to pretty them up is not faithful to the source material (though maybe more faithful to the production art as pic related.)
Not like the remake stole my Wii disc though so whatever.

Remakes in general are definitely bad for the soul of gaming, and for its future. But that's just a symptom of the unsustainable world we live in.

What we should hope for is that a Gears remake be handled by the Monolith staff with SE having little to no meddling "oversight." Unlikely, but not an impossibility what with the KOS-MOS treat.

90's anime art had the same "cringe" energy that got lampooned hard. You're just too drunk on them childhood cum juice to realize.

And ratings can't seem to be negotiated in exchange for creative freedom? I mean, will a game under CERO's D rating not sell well?

        Anonymous

Ratings in the US are completely opaque, even publishers don't have any idea what criteria is used to give ratings. I have read developer interviews where they will receive a rating on a game, change nothing at all, send it back for review and get a different rating.

American games seem to be much less concerned with ratings though, and I can only assume it's because in Japan it's not so easy for kids to buy games of a D rating as it is for American kids to get M rated games like GTA. So an M won't limit your potential audience the way a CERO-D or Z will.

You can read about CERO's process here
        https://www.cero.gr.jp/en/publics/index/17/

In their "Categories Covered By Rating" section, almost every single item listed is present in Xenogears in much greater prominence than later, except for the "swimwear/costume" item, which Blade has it beat at.

I think a remake might be on the table.
As of late Enix has adopted this "HD2D" style for games and already used it to remake a few, I wouldn't be surprised if Xenogears got this treatment.
The style is basically the modernized version of Xenogears' art.

Monolith Soft would be able to faithfully recreate the Gears artstyle in 3D since they did exactly that in XB2 when Shulk and Fiora got redesigns by Tanaka, but it's entirely out of their hands.
A Gears remake by Square would be tolerable if you liked the aesthetics of the Live A Live remake and Ikushima Naoki's artstyle.

It literally is though. RE2M plays exactly the same as the OG game with resource management, puzzle solving, and routing your way through a complex environment to avoid enemy encounters when you can.

Literally the only difference is that combat takes some minor bit of reflexes now. But the game still encourages you to not engage in it whenever you can.

(Now if you said this about RE3M you'd have a point).

        >RE2M plays exactly the same as the OG game with resource management, puzzle solving, and routing your way through a complex environment to avoid enemy encounters when you can.

Yes, but also no; 2RE puts a lot of effort into bridging the gap in game design between 2 original and 1/1RE, resulting in a noticeable increase in Classic Resident Evil Puzzle Bullshit compared to the original, to the point of bringing back item examination as a means of interacting with the game state, which is usually associated with the likes of 1 and CV.

As someone who loves Resi puzzle bullshit this means a lot to me and is why 2RE immediately replaced RE2 in my eyes.

I finally watched a playthrough of disc 2 last year, and I can say that I don't enjoy Gears plot because the backstory is too long and repetitive, with like 3? 4? Cycles of reincarnations. Add the fact that Fei is an amnesiac and you have like 5 layers of "past selves", trying to cram all that into one game (and especially disc 2) made it very convoluted.

Feels like they could've made their point with like 1 cycle of reincarnation, or just keep the amnesiac part like FF7

      Anonymous

Having multiple cycles is one of the best parts. It conveys the truly epic and mythological scale of Fei and Elly's story.
Having just 1 cycle would make it far too narrow.
Using repetition hammers that point home perfectly.

        Anonymous

No matter what, there has to be multiple cycles, that's what makes it hit so hard.
But if you want to consolidate things, look at how Xenoblade 3 revisited the motif and focused on the major plot consequences of having two characters somehow across multiple incarnations always falling in love with one another, and one of those two being the kind of guy who puts GENDO IKARI to fricking shame in being unable to function properly in the face of loss of their loved one.

Blade 1 was alright, you had wienerpit, theme, and such. Hell all the setup was going about discovering that metal face are mechs was kinda nice. As well as giants being huge robots basically, with mechanical race.
2 was garbage and threw it all into the gutter, with like one half decent mazinger z reference and maybe singular decent design.
3 was trying but falls apart in a middle, still going thru it but it doesn't look good. You have two forces which have their own giant robots but you never seen them piloting shit, only talking about piloting stuff. Decent mechanical design which didn't do additional step.

No, Kunihiko Tanaka did all 3. Learn your character designers.
        Gears
        Saga 1 (2 and 3 were Choco/Mugitani)
        X
were all Tanaka on lead character design. KOS-MOS was Mugitani except Blade 2 where Tanaka did the guest game characters including KOS-MOS.
Tanaka's art never seems to make for good 3D models. Tiny facial features and too broadly spaced eyes is just odd in 3D or something.

          Anonymous

Because people are talking about Tanaka in reference to the game's look, but he doesn't really matter as much in the end results.
An anime character designer/animation director's role isn't comparable to a character designer for games.
With games character designers never(or just very rarely) will have input on the final product's look.(see almost anything Amano has worked on)
In anime they can be involved with corrections though, Hirai doesn't animate all of SEED obviously, but he definitely will have certain scenes where his direct input is clear as day.
You don't really have this kind of individual artistry show up in games that often.

And what a shame too, Too few character artists can do keyframing. Not everyone can be Haruhiko Mikimoto or Yutaka Izubuchi I guess.

I think he was pointing it out because you said it like people hated Tanaka's art style, when what was really the issue was the quality of the 3d models.

Most of them are okay IMO but the e-girls frickin' potato face was really jarring whenever she's on screen.

            Anonymous

Also this is an issue with a lot of 3d anime games. I can think of quite a few that have super appealing character designs, promo art, concept art, etc. but end up having that uncanny doll-like or potato-face in-game.

In comparison you may not be a fan of Mihoyo but they really are incredibly good at translating their designs to 3d.

Genshin's character's faces don't look weird because they are cel shaded. The characters have their own lighting system that only affects them and is meant to make them look as good as possible The characters are not affected by the same realistic lighting affects the environments.

                Anonymous

Yes, and? Shading and lighting trickery are definitely, definitely part of the craft of realizing a design in 3d. I think in general you're going to need to do a lot of smart tricks like that to make an anime design work in 3d, and devs who aren't smart about how their visuals are always going to fall short of the concept artists work.

Also on that note generally I think lighting is the frickiest thing to get right with 3d anime art styles. I remember back in Phantasy Star Online 2 noting how a character could look decent in one angle/lighting but look absolutely fricking horrid in another.
