Same reason Apple can sell you multiple products with varying level of features.

Apple does give you HEVC for free though.

You understand on windows you don't have to download everything through the microsoft store, right? In fact, there's more software available for windows than any other OS. Some of that software was developed way back in the 90s and it can still run on modern windows, cool eh?

I...don't see how this takes away from the fact encode/decode support for H.265 is in macOS from the start. They also provide a number of expensive fonts like Avenir. Say what you will about iOS, but macOS is not bad.

            I see your
'Having to take a moment to install something.'
            and I raise you
'Cannot buy and install any GPU you want'

Imagine paying $1000 just to get a $0.99 codec.

because hackintoshes are a minuscule percentage of all macOS installs

It's included because it's 3 times more expensive than an average pc

You're referring to the x264 encoder/decoder that ffmpeg produces as source and is built by VideoLAN for VLC.

Europe doesn't do software patents unlike the cucked US.

It has to do with licensing fees, patents and royalties. HEVC is not free. There are dozens of companies and organizations that have been involved in it's development and there are thousands of patents. Honestly I’m surprised it’s only $1.

I've installed mine using an old win7 cd key, so I guess its better to find an your old win OS key, since you are allowed to technically use the same cd key twice, and I do believe there's a market where people are selling their once-used cd keys.

When i built my new pc, I tried to use a windows 7 and 8 key that i legally own. Neither of them worked on 11. I ended up having to buy Windows 11. Ended up with pro because fuck home editions. I really don’t care to be honest. I’ve always just bought Windows. $200 isn’t a lot of money for something I use that much.

Furthering my thought, reason i didnt go with 8 or 10 is my new cpu has ecores and neither os supports it properly. 7 wont even boot. After i got used to the new ui, I’m completely fine with 11.

Imagine spending $200 on a spyware OS that can't even play videos and then spending extra time and effort to try and disable most of the "features" and configure it to a barely usable state.
