There was, it was called grand apartheid.

The problem for a would be cartographer seeking to cut the country up was that economics and politics had already very much brought the races together, geographically.

The Cape from its very early years had become a racially mixed society, with whites, Asians and natives all in evidence. Certainly the rest of the country was more or less a preserve of blacks at that time, but the Trekboers and the growth of coastal cities like Durban in the east of South Africa soon but an end to that. The growth of JOHANNESBURG above all else made partition impractical: you now had the heart of white South Africa's business concerns in the heart of a demographically black region.

Even now, you could try simply to recreate the old Cape Colony as a separate state, and who knows maybe that could happen, but it wouldn't change the fact that there are millions of whites living in other regions, regions that are today as or more important than the Cape economically and otherwise.

The white area is majority coloured

Also lots of whites and wealth live in the black area (joburg, pretoria, transvaal farmland/mines)

The boerstaat would be in an inhospitable desert

Most people in the cape were black or mixed with black.

Hell, Afrikaners are on average 5% to 10% black.

    It would make no sense.

To be fair, there's no reason why separatist movements in South Africa need insist on racial purity. Just because Strydom, Verwoerd etc. wanted it to be that way doesn't mean something else couldn't be tried.

The real solution is to just do what Mandela was trying to do

Separatism is untenable, the cape cant stand alone.

No they aren't. There is no meaningful admixture in their average at all, particular outlying individuals may be 5% black.

There is an average of 5% non euro admixture
Most of it is Khoisan and SEA, no south eastern bantu and a <1% west African

Partition had support among apartheid ideologues but their economy was dependent on cheap labor from black people. Hence Bantustans instead of viable states.

Upper class whites didn't want to lose their cheap labour, blacks wanted to keep rich white tax payers, white farmers didn't want to leave their fertile land to live in the fricking desert, coloureds didn't want to be alone with whites (atleast not at the time), Indians didn't want to be alone with blacks, Anglo whites in the east would obviously not want to be left out, many Boer nationalists would never ever want to give up the land of their old republics, and a number of other reasons.

The white part would have eventually been overrun by illegal immigration from the black part, leading to roughly the same situation as today.

They did it themselves with Orania. They just bought some shitty desert land all the blacks left and set up a company who sells the houses present and then you have to eventually sell it back to the company. This basically let's them decide who get's to live there since the company is run by the community. They can also just expand it by buying more land surrounding it. The government constantly threatens to end it though since it is one of the only functioning places in the country.
