Oh good, an obsidian thread. I'm gonna go ahead and ignore your OP question and instead ask:

Does anyone have recommendations for good plugins to handle note backup and sync? I'd like to keep my notes self-hosted, but I need to use a plugin since I'd like to be able to access my notes on my phone (ie. no just using rsync). I've seen the most popular one, obsidian-livesync, but I'm a little wary about it since I've heard mixed things about the couchDB you need to run as a backend.

    Any suggestions?

I just use it with syncthing between desktop, laptop and phone and it works well. P2P, can be set to be read only on some devices or read/write, with potential conflicts.

      I use github.
If you have problems with github reading your furry novels you don't actually want a solution.

Obsidian-git. I use it with GitHub to keep it all synced in a private repo.

No. Buy sync and use remote save for attachments only. Has been A+ with OneDrive.

Linking notes. I'm currently studying for OSCP and using it to link tools/techniques to various parts of the course. It's really useful so far for quick navigation of my notes.

I used tresorit for a while, seemed to work well. Same with proton drive. No sync to iPhones using this method though. I eventually just paid for obsidian sync because I got a student discount on it, and because I wanted no-bs syncing to my phone.

      deprecated in favor of logseq

Tried LogSeq, the first thing it did upon installation was crash. I closed and uninstalled within about 20 seconds. Also it looked ugly.

I use several .txt files. I'm really not sure what is the usecase for a note taking app.

it makes my notes look really nice, I can link one note to another and use the hyperlinks to jump around, and I can format everything in markdown.

        >I can link one note to another and use the hyperlinks to jump around
You can do something like this in vim if you just put a file path in the notes and then press gx to open it. More of a link than a hyperlink, but it's something. You can probably get fancier with org-mode in emacs.

I just setup syncthing on my laptop, phone, and medi server. the media server serves as a good device that is always available to sync for the other two.

well you can do the same thing as Obsidian with, pen, paper, red string and a bunch of pushpins, but sooner or later someone will start wanting you to take lithium.

pen & paper fags don't like pen and paper they just need to get away from the internet long enough to do something productive. that's the real secret- getting off this godforsaken place.

Same, and you don't even need it to use markdown, even a browser extension could do the trick. I don't want to say that Obsidian isn't useful, but 99% of the homosexuals using it to generate le cool brain link graph are only doing it for internet points.

Any good alternative to this on Android? I just use Standard Notes for everything but organizing my notes is trash.

Why don't people just use a git repo/markdown for taking notes? Works everywhere

I suspect it's either a personality trait or lack of experience. They want this magic tool to solve all their problems, they don't want to think in detail about how they can solve their own problems. From comments I've seen online, people who take a lot of notes end up changing software/methods a lot over time, so probably a decent amount end up just using git and markdown in the end.

This is markdown (with a nice repository of addons), and nothing’s stopping you from using git with it. If you were going to be comparing this to something that’s FOSS it would be emacs org mode.
