Laptops that can't be repaired only got popular because the other option was removed. Now that they are bringing it back there's no reason to consider cucked hardware that can't be repaired. It's the single most important feature in any device, being able to fix it when it eventually will break. Assuming that things won't break is the mindset of people who don't take backups either. Always assume it breaks.

No, consider the pentium 4 came out in 2000. So you use that until 2010 and it breaks. Do you repair your pentium 4 so you can use it for another 10 years or do you buy a new i3?
The pentium 4 is so outdated that you won’t be able to run things, so you buy the new i3.
So really, you only need a laptop to last 10 years and I know you’re going to be like “YOU CAN STILL USE A PENTIUM 4! THE ONLY REASON YOU CAN’T IS BECAUSE OF EVIL COMPANIES ABE BAD DEVELOPERS!”
Sure, that might be true but guess what? You live in a world with evil companies and bad developers. It’s noble you don’t want to endorse them but you also live in a society where you can’t socialize with normal people without a Facebook and shit.
You don’t need to go full stallman, you can still endorse free software and good practices. Lean towards those technologies but don’t harm yourself in the process.

it sounds good if you have lots of money to spend but there are cheaper repairable laptops like the x230

It's a shitty macbook wannabe whose only advantage is that it's repairable. If you want a "good laptop" then this isn't it, if you want a "worth it's money laptop" then this isn't it, if you want a "trendy laptop" then this isn't it. The only reason to buy it is muh repair meme which you won't do anyway.

All laptops are repairable anyway, with the right skills. It just seems some anons are so braindead they can only do basic b***h plug and play shit.

It's a meme, not serious enough. I'll only concede and approve them as real when they finally make the CPU (and dGPU if they decided to make larger model) user-removable (socketed), Make the motherboard customizable (renewed with newer components once every several years). Framework is promising for whipping all gay OEMs with non user-replaceable shit copying MacBooks.
Otherwise, it's nothing more than a laptop that you can "fidget" around.

        Anonymous

        >I can see why people idealistically want the device but mine is really not up to being a usable production device. The wonky design of the “modules” means they’re practically useless, the hardware has almost endlessly has stability and issues with bricking, it has never once given me confidence in almost any respect. I want to love the thing and there’s nice features about the product, but I’d hesitate to suggest anybody seriously use the thing.
there is a reason they don't, they want to make usable device

          Anonymous

that's an implementation issue, not a design issue. The fact that the ports are modular makes them more repairable. Framework just needs to improve reliability

        Anonymous

no they just give you all the ports you need and you don't have to buy $20 modules (AKA dongles)

i get that its repairable but what i really wanna know is do they have any moronic design defects that make them break in the first place? like how those old macbooks have the fans that redirect hot air onto the glue that holds the "unibody" together, or the thing withthe keyboard power button making it impossible to turn on if that thingy gets shorted so you cant even use an external keyboard, or any other of the number of grievances rossmann has publicized on his channel

Their biggest mistake is trying to appeal to the muh thin and sleek mac hipster audience instead of the Thinkpad worker audience. Mac users don't give a shit about repairability or non-Apple products, but someone who picks Thinkpad is exactly the kind of person that this kind of thing is valuable to.

Imagine if they had made a Thinkpad clone with replaceable trackpad with 3 trackpad buttons, replaceable keyboard with all the function keys that a programmer wants and proper key switches, 5+ USB ports and a lot of other input ports, and of course easily replaceable and repairable parts all the way from the screen to the inner components. Thinkpad would be dead.

If clevo was cheaper we'd ready be at optimum repairability

I think they went with an ultrabook sized machine first so they can wave their dicks in the faces of people who claim that ultrabooks have to be built with proprietary and integrated hardware because of hurr size restrictions. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually did eventually come out with a thicker laptop with a hell of a lot more space to play with.
If they ever manage to get manufacturers to return to socketed mobile processors and MXM-like replaceable mobile video cards then I'll be impressed.
What they've got now is basically a proof of concept laptop to show off and attract additional funding with. Like funding a kickstarter except it's not some random jerkoff who's going to run off with your money.

      >Their biggest mistake is trying to appeal to the muh thin and sleek mac hipster audience

because marketing, normies perceive thin devices as the highest technology and they don't like fat laptop because they are not as "thin" as they expect. Kind of like a car, normies think GM, BMW and Tesla are "better" cars that japanese brands because they are complete ignorant about cars, laptops or whatever shit .

Has anyone used one of these things? I'm worried about the quality of the keyboard. It looks really cool though, might sell my Thinkpad and buy the DIY version if it ever comes in stock

entire idea of this company is that its products will break and you will repair them, theyre banking on the fact that their hardware breaks and is easily replaceable.
no, not the future because the average consumer will toss their device and buy a new one.
see, broken iphones, bought a new one. broken mac or windows laptop, just buys a new one. the idea of repair is great and I'm all for right to repair but nobody actually cares. same type of thing with linux, it's great, but 90% of people don't care.

Idk but I really hate breaking clips on laptops when taking them apart to clean or upgrade. If they could make a laptop that is solid and doesn't have clips it would be a meaningful improvement on the product.

It seems like a good idea for a laptop, but it likely won't take off. Normies don't give a shit about repairability. Even with the ripoff macbook design and the linus shilling, no one will probably buy it.
