Why no second attempt at secession?

With slavery being abolished in the Civil War, there is no real moral reason to oppose a second attempt at secession by the 13 Rebel states represented on the Stars and Bars.

So why hasn't there been one? Why have Southerners been content to remain within a nation that mocks and derides them while at the same time blatantly steals and commercialized Southern culture e.g rock and roll?

Why have Southerners not risen up again? There's not even a genuine regionalist or secessionist party in the South aside from a few overweight Neo-Confederate types on civil war boards who generally oppose modern secession anyway and just want to argue about the Civil Wars causes.

Because all the southern secessionist parties are all state only or neo-confederate. And the neo-confed ones have even less support than the state only ones

Because the South would be a third world shithole without federal gibs, and they know that.

    >With slavery being abolished in the Civil War, there is no real moral reason to oppose a second attempt at secession
Because protecting slavery was the reason for succession in the first place. With it abolished the motivation for a united succession attempt was lost.

There are plenty of other reasons for secession today however. The South was basically turned into an extractive economic colony after the war, that's why its so poor today compared to the rest of the country.

It also has a distinct culture and identity. Slavery may have been the reason in 1860 but there are new reasons today.

        1) They lost their slaves so short of gaining them back there'd be no reason to secede
        2) The Union was smart and responsible and didn't pursue a bloodthirsty vindictive policy but was more conciliatory towards former rebels. Perhaps a bit too much, but there wasn't the grievance mongering to ferment more unrest.
        3) Outside of the great depression we didn't have the kinds of economic (and political) crises to allow secession. Had the US fallen apart with some kind of communistic uprising in the 20s or 30s then yeah Dixie would form again.
        4) You quickly got representatives back in the South and thanks to Jim Crowe were able to pretty much maintain the old status quo, so no reason to give up your gravy train for big risks.
        5) American-Spanish war helped bring together Dixie and Yankee as did subsequent wars.
        6) Only later in the 20th century well over +50 years later did you see greater and greater federal involvement in the states. And until the 50s that tended to benefit the south and not challenge its ideals.

Secession today would be an utter disaster. People are all gung ho for the idea if you don't start to show them the price of it. Overnight every boomer would lose every iota of social security for one - unless someone thinks the Fed would pay social security for citizens of a breakaway country.

        > was basically turned into an extractive economic colony after the war,
That's what it was before the war, and that's what Southern leaders wanted it to be.
        >We are an agricultural people; we are a primitive but a civilised people. We have no cities—we don’t want them. We have no literature—we don’t need any yet. We have no press—we are glad of it. We do not require a press, because we go out and discuss all public questions from the stump with our people. We have no commercial marine—no navy—we don’t want them. We are better without them. Your ships carry our produce, and you can protect your own vessels. We want no manufactures: we desire no trading, no mechanical or manufacturing classes. As long as we have our rice, our sugar, our tobacco, and our cotton, we can command wealth to purchase all we want from those nations with which we are in amity, and to lay up money besides.
        Idiotic.
        > that's why its so poor today compared to the rest of the country
It's poor because at every possible level it instituted policies that discouraged productive investment (especially in human capital) and high-productivity sectors. Only reason it achieved what it has is federal gibs and exploiting the US free trade zone to undercut everyone else with a submissive workforce.

By that logic it makes no difference if the South is independent or within the federal union; an independent southern state would still be, by virtue of geography and cultural similarity, part and parcel of the American agricultural sector, and ironically completely dependent on the Yankees for technical and mechanical expertise come the inevitability of industrialization of farming.

The North could have washed itself of a socio-cultural region that has only served to embarass the United States as a whole politically and still reap all the economic benefits by the unfair free trade deals that would the South would have no choice but to accept.

The only possible worry is that an independent Confederacy would be a hot-bed for left-wing (and right wing) populism. Castro, Chavez, Tito, Franco, Mussolini etc figures would be common and if politically successful could begin a process of nationalization and industrialization which would not be beneficial for the North but absolutely no one in 1860 had that kind of foresight.

because the only reason they tried to leave in the first place was over slavery, and even then people really overestimate how committed a good amount of states are (for example a good portion barely had enough votes to leave, had to had said vote recounted multiple times so they can get the result slave owners wanted, or just forced to since they were surronded), this means despite the memes there really isn't anything solid to start another movement, made worse by the fact the South also benefits far more from federal jobs and money to function or the fact they would also have a massive population opposed to a neo confederacy (a frick huge amount of blacks that live there are never supporting it so have fun with that, or the various citygays since most of them are liberals so have fun with that as well, then you have the beaners who have no attachment to it so why bother supporting it, even conservative white southerns wouldn't really see a reason to support it since they are still mostly loyal to the US even if they preferred morons stop defacing Lee statues)

The North was consistently more economically powerful then the South and so a secession was practically impossible
Ironically the South/North are closer then they were ever were now economically so they'd stand a bigger chance now then before

The only reason the south is catching up to the north is northern cities are too expensive so young northern professionals are moving to southern cities. This will probably reverse somewhat now that southern states are banning abortion.

Because the northern states raped the economies of the southern states and left them crippled, and completely unable to function without northern money. Then the northerners complain about the southern states needing more federal money.

Balkanization is a mistake. It weakens us and allows us to be controlled easily by the forces we hate. Abe Lincoln knew this.

So they can preserve their culture, accents, literature, sense of identity, and not be absorbed into the commercialized "American" melting pot that has gone off the rails and become a shadow of its former self.
