Seems like it would be very useful for that, e.g. "this population's mitochondrial DNA is all that of the people who were in the area before but their Y-DNA isn't so they're all rapebabies".

Haplobros, what can we say confidently about mt haplogroups? It seems that H is an Upper Paleolithic West Asian haplogroup that spread into Europe with EEF and with CHG via Indo-Europeans. U is a Paleolithic European or Siberian haplogroup.
