The problem in the US is that outside major cities most places have banned mixed use zoning and have idiotic zoning laws in place like minimum required parking spaces (which will be 80% empty most of the time). Allow mixed use zoning and get rid of zoning laws that favor automobiles to the exclusion of everything else and let the free market sort it out. If people actually want to live in suburbs 30 minutes removed from anything else they still can. My guess is that many places will end up looking like pic related.
The left also thinks the entire nation is comprised of the few megahomosexual cities they inhabit and have their spheres of influence in.
Mass transit systems only work in super population dense areas but leftoids don't even know what a fucking farm looks like but they demand all states should ban trucks.

The rust belt in NY and PA were helped built up by train lines connecting small towns to larger population centers and it worked. It was with the rise of cars, airlines, and highway systems that led to the decline. What makes more money for the overload elites? Cars / gasoline or trains / coal.

It's suburbanites who are dependent on cars.
You can easily put train stations in suburbs.
The issue is as follows. Left wingers tend to be city fucks. Right wingers tend not to live in cities. Left wing people tend to think there is a one size fits all solution to every problem. They tend to think that what is good for their urban shithole, is good for rural Alabama. So when something like walking instead of driving is pitched, it tends not to dawn on left wingers that it just won’t work in the middle of nowhere. Rural people have had city fucks stomping on their necks for a couple centuries at this point, so any proposal is seen through that lens. Thankful where I'm at. Few blocks away are two grocery stores and a mall. 7 11 is also within walking distance as is one of them middle eastern run convenient stores. Other areas of my town though are fucked. All they want to do is keep building more and more houses and not improve infrastructure. Not putting in new shopping centers, convenience stores, just more and more mcmansion neighborhoods. And if you're dumb enough to buy into one of those you have it fucking coming.

We literally did this to someone. My wife was friends with a crunchy vegan couple who used to stay with us in the sticks now and again and shit on it the whole time. Talk shit about my tractor, beat up old pick up, etc. they had to move short notice and asked for our help and we said no. They were only moving like 12 blocks a way, so my wife told them to move their shit on foot. They gave it a shot and got caught carrying their mattress when a downpour hit and ruined it. We laughed at them when they called to complain and they never spoke to us again.
The people who complain about other people with trucks are the lazy fucks who don't do shit outside. They sit down at work all day, then go home to sit down. I use my truck a lot. A truck will always be a primary vehicle for me. I laugh when I see cucks with plywood on the roof of their car or a 2x4x8 sticking out the side window, or hauling trash to the dump that leaked all over the inside of their trunk, etc.

We would have parking spaces everywhere and people would still be perfectly able to walk or take a train. Sure, let people have vehicles but cars and trucks should be more for local travel, the interstate highway system was one of the largest missteps in American history.
No amount of adding lanes will fix the core issues that are caused from the ground level. Trains are a much better solution for mass travel, and cars and trucks for local.
Having our local small towns have better walking routes, small passenger train stations, as well as a few roads for cars would be much better.
But the problem is that our entire country's routes are based on highways and cars because of the interstates and the decline of the passenger railway system.

If towns and cities were designed better, you'd be able to get off the train close enough to where you'd be able to walk where you'd need to go. What I mean by the roads for cars and trucks, I mean like local travel and for deliveries.
Our cities aren't built in any kind of intelligent way. Northeastern cities are typically built with both railroads and walking in mind, but in the last 100 years they've moved more towards cars which have made it more difficult, but newer cities in the west and southwest have been nearly entirely built on the idea of car travel.
