It's the music's sense of humor. If the show sees it fit to play that within its own context, then that says something about both matching up fairly well. I did not even realize the direct connection until I saw the Youtube comments, as all these 3-chord songs sound almost exactly the same.

Some prog comes very close to punk!
Most of the prog bands from the 70s were having fun in their own way, nearly all of the prog musicians from the era were just nerdy guys playing nerdy music with the boys; the idea that it was "highbrow" and "snobby" and "holier than thou" came from its fans and pretentious music journalists which reflected on later waves of prog.
