You need a special license for a morgan threewheeler?

      Anonymous

      It's technically a motorcycle

        Anonymous

I don't think you need a typical motorcycle endorsement. In many states "3 wheel cars" are their own category or at a minimum you need a really easy-to-get dumbed down trike motorcycle license. The whole point of a motorcycle license is because of added difficulties of operation of a 2 wheel vehicle over a 4, a 3 wheel is basically a 4 wheel vehicle where you have to be careful not to roll it in certain situations.

Anon is right. A lot of states classify 3 wheeled cars as a weird class. It depends on the states and the vehicle since things like a Polaris trike counts as a motorcycle but a car-shaped one might count as a special class

            Anonymous

Owning a car without AC is unbearable in the Summer. Even up North you need it. Only in the least densely populated areas could you maybe get away without it, but cities have too much concrete and ambient heat generation (AC exhaust from buildings, car exhaust, etc) to not die from heatstroke in the Summer.

I've experienced over 100 F at 90%+ humidity, what are you asking about?

Anywhere that gets over 72 F and sunny during the Summer needs AC if you don't want to be a sweaty mess just commuting. The sunshine alone will push the felt temp well above 80 F.

The point is that no one with sense wants a car without A/C, so there's no point making or selling one. It's just going to sit on the lot until some shivering chihuahua of a human being that finds 90 degrees a nice room temperature to come along and offer way below MSRP.

Obviously heatstroke was hyperbole, but the need for A/C as standard is clearly obvious.

I don't live in NYC anymore, I was using it as an example of a place up North that still gets viciously hot a few days a year and honestly needs A/C for most of Summer. I live in Texas now and I doubt you're hotter than the 105 F I had for most of this Summer and I can tell you with certainty I'd rather light a car on fire than buy it without A/C.

The Elio tried to be a more practical version of that, but just as they were trying to gain momentum the price of gas went way down and then they switched to EV as soon as gas shot up again. From what I've heard, their strategy was always to get bought out by a big nameplate, so now they're just in limbo without enough money to build cars but not wanting to shut down and lose it all.

    >Why is it like this:

-emission laws making carburetors an absolute non-starter

-ever increasing safety minimum standards so people can't just off themselves with a sloppy traffic maneuver and then walk away from their debts.

-ever increasing reliability and longevity of cars leading people to prefer used luxury (or otherwise upmarket) cars over bare bones basic cars. A used Camry will always be a better car than a Versa for the same price.

-much of the added tech and complexity makes the car more reliable and less likely to break down in the first place. An old school simple car might be straightforward to fix, but it's broken far more often, and most people don't want to rebuild a carb or change spark plugs constantly and increasingly due to real estate costs it's cost prohibitive to even have the work space to do it if you're in a remotely urban area. Also, who knows how many accidents were caused back in the day from shitty shadetree repairs with people that didn't know what they were doing. "Got air in the brake lines, whoopsie daisy!" *everyone dies*

      Anonymous

Don't romanticize carbs. They went away for a reason. They sucked. Port fuel injection is far more efficient and in many cases it's simpler

        Anonymous

Nah I want carbs back. Simple shit that you can fix on your own. Modern bike carbs are great. Less tech in a car the better

        Anonymous

They went away because of emissions regs.
They were a boon for the shadetree mechanic, because you can tune/repair them with simple hand tools and elbow grease. EFI requires a computer

          Anonymous

          >EFI requires a computer
A $40 scan tool is a really low bar for entry for what you're getting. You don't need to tune EFI because it's self learning and is very accurate. In the old days of carbs the only way to get a good tune was with a huge sniffer machine to calculate how many unburned Hydrocarbons are left in the exhaust. Needless to say no shade tree mechanic had access to that kind of equipment

            Anonymous

Or you could sit there and fiddle with it with a $2 screwdriver. Which, again, isn’t a specialist one-use tool.

why are convertibles more expensive if you are literally getting less car
the base model of a car should be a roofless car with no rag top or any lifting mechanism, no ac, manual, no radio, no infotainment or digital anything

      Anonymous

They have to redesign a lot of the chassis to make up for the lack of structural rigidity. Back in the day it was just “chopping the roof off” because cars were BOF, so it made no difference what you did to the body. On monocoque cars the roof is a major component for the chassis, so chopping it off has a major affect on the integrity. Imagine two bricks held together with a single playing card.
It’s why modern convertibles typically weigh more than the coupe variant

        Anonymous

Nah just chop the roof off and let the Poors feel with chassis flex. I'd rather have that.

    Mainly safety and emission regulations.

But even more so to get to OP’s questions, compatibility is a big factor. Many car companies now operate as conglomerates, and have parts/factories that can work interchangeably lowers costs across the board and lowers future r&d as well. And even then you got to remember most people aren’t autists like on here and do actually want some level of comfort and amenities, and having a bit more expensive car with some standard luxury features with a lot of sales beats out having a bit cheaper car with abysmal sales.
