The punishment does not fit the "crime." Nobody was harmed; no private property was damaged or destroyed except his own; he's being charged with obstructing a federal investigation. Why? Because he cleaned up the wreckage he caused.
There was no crime that required a federal investigation in the first place. It's a process crime and twenty years is absurd given the circumstances.

He was being investigated by the FAA for violating FAA regulations, namely flying an aircraft in a reckless manner. He then obstructed their investigation which brought on charges of obstruction.

                >If it was the risk of danger to life or property
He purposefully crashed a airplane in a national forest during fire season. Los Padres are one of the worst places in california for wildfires. the crash could have caused a wildfire which would have absolutely endangered people and property.

        >First, he said he couldn't determine the crash location, but in reality, he admitted in the plea agreement to tapping a friend with a helicopter to help him retrieve the wreckage. Upon that retrieval, Jacob then admitted to driving the wreckage to Lompoc City Airport, where he detached parts and tossed them out, dispersing the evidence in airport and other trash receptacles. The plea agreement said this "was done with the intent to obstruct federal authorities from investigating the November 24 plane crash."

          >Jacob admitted in the plea agreement to falsely indicating that the plane had lost power and an engine quit after takeoff. He initially claimed that "because he could not identify any safe landing options, he had parachuted out of the plane," but the DOJ reported that in the plea agreement, he admitted that he staged it all and "intended to make money through the video."

          >In April 2022, the FAA revoked Jacob's pilot license, noting that, among other concerns, Jacob made no attempt to contact Air Traffic Control, restart the engine, or look for areas to safely land the plane, "even though there were multiple areas within gliding range" where he could have landed the plane. The FAA determined that Jacob violated federal aviation regulations by operating an aircraft in such a "careless or reckless" manner.

          >In addition to admitting in the plea agreement to lying to federal investigators, Jacob seemingly lied to media outlets, too. Last year, Jacob told The New York Times, “I’ll happily say I did not purposely crash my plane for views on YouTube.” He said that he could see why people would think he staged the crash but denied the accusations while saying, "People can believe whatever they choose."
