I got promoted because I didn't want to stay late, so I just rebuilt the whole process for doing the thing instead so that it didn't need a bunch of boneheaded extra work to get it done. I will get my next promotion the same way. I am climbing in the world because I am lazy and don't want to do things. Work smarter, not harder.
I used to do this at the advice of a "Firm Handshake" Boomer, and then my boss expressed some suspicion about why I was doing it. I am still perplexed about the whole thing but for reasons I still don't understand it undermined her trust in me and we were never able to get along after that.

When I started my job, I negotiated that would be responsible for certain tasks, and would receive a specific salary for doing those tasks. Because I am actually competent at my job, I can complete those all the standard tasks with plenty of time to spare, thus giving me leeway for the rare oddball situation that needs more time.
If you can not complete your job within regular hours, either you suck at your job, or you suck at a negotiating what your job will be.

Anyone who has to work outside of their hours is a moron or new, and didn't size their estimates correctly, poor are just lying to people about their capacity. I've gotten regular promotions and refused one that would take me too far from the work I actually enjoy doing.
