Why does the Hispanic label exist as a race in the US?

Why does the “Hispanic” label exist as a race in the US? As a Mexican-American, it doesn’t make sense why different races are lumped together because of language. Also, Mexican history appreciation thread.

I agree entirely with you. The FBI will also classify MENA people as white too which is ridiculous. American concepts of race are beyond broken. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people refer to mexicans as "spanish people" by some 80iq lardass whose use of the internet is restricted to tiktok dance videos.

No, the latin identity is one that belongs to italy. We honestly need a name that's specific to mesoamericans and south americans.

Plenty of “Hispanics” are black and plenty are white. Me for example, I am a white Mexican-American.

yeah exactly, south america is too mixed to have any national race declaration, well the america of today is like that, but i imagine back in the day it wasnt
considering it was 90% white in 1950
i guess you could consider them culturally mixed but not racially mixed like with the natives and the spanish, and i guess some slaves thrown in

You're not white, even if your skin color was fair (which I doubt). At best you are castizo, so please stop larping as a european-american.

It doesn't though, not officially. That's why "non-Hispanic white" exists. Colloquially, explictly or implicitly, people do think of "Hispanic" as a race because it kind of is. Most Hispanics in the US are Mexican and Mexicans are mostly mestizos. "Race" can also be used in the sense of the "English race" the "French race" and so on.

All afroamericans should be labeled as anglos then which is equivalent to the hispanic label.
Afroamericans are a mix of white and black, they were born in an anglo country, have anglo surnames, speak English, have a history living in the USA (since plantations and slavery).

Why do we have to accept that afroamericans are a different label than yankies/whites/anglos? A black dominican has less to do with a white argentinan than a afroamerican with his white cousin from across the street.

Afroamericans are seem as anglos abroad, not even africans see them as their kind, look at Liberia conflict between afrosaxons and local africans.

If we sent them all then they would have just enough intelligence to wipe out the lesser races for us. Black americans could be their own Normans of Africa and end up the upper classes.

Race in the U.S is different than that of Latin America, in Latin America you have terms to fully describe the spectrum of mixture of people based on looks, class, and classes that people want to distant themselves from or merge into. In the U.S, labels are either ridiculously wide or ridiculous specific, African-Americans, formerly known as Blacks and Coloreds, go from all shades from dark brown to lighter yellows with varying levels of European features ranging from more defined nose bridges.looser curled hair, thinner lips, to looking like they came straight off the boat from West Africa, but despite the various mixture, due to historical precedence, grift, and a strong cultural presence, many remain and still classify themselves as black. There are blacks in the U.S that wouldn't be counted as Blacks in Brazil or Mexico due to their admixture. On the other hand, compared to Latin American nations the definition of White in the U.S has generally remains fairly strict, with most whites in the U.S being of Northern and Central European descent and being relatively unmixed when compared to their Latin American contemporaries. A person that would be white from a Latin American country could pass as white in the U.S if they were overwhelming of Spanish stock, but other than that most would generally have several features "off" about them that don't fit the all of usual Northern/Central European features that are associated with Whites in the U.S. The US has more family lines of pure whites due to anti miscegenation laws and any mutts basically being counted as the other race they descend from besides white, this is also part of the reason why African American mixture rates average out at 15-25% white, but are all over the place. Meanwhile in Latin America, you have had generations of successful Mestizos and Castizos marrying into the whiter upper classes distinguishing them from the US' whites. Americans can't see race past binaries.
