i think the implication is modern battlefield weapons are so lethal that armor on an infantry vehicle wont save you--so they said fuck it all. now why it costs so much for a chassis and some steel tubing? fuck if i know...

To be fair, it's a taxi for behind the lines and not a fighting nor defensive vehicle. This is not designed nor intended for combat. Being extremely durable, offroad capable and easily repaired are the benefits here.

To be honest however, rear echelon vehicles in the age of small, covert armed drones require light armour and anti-spalling liners. I saw a picture of Iraqi army HMMWV's responding to the recent anti-Iran protests at the Iraqi parliament, and they have applied lessons learned since the Syrian war: the addition of sloped roofs to the gun turret to deflect and defend against aerial dropped grenade attacks. This ISV at least doesn't have confined spaces to amplify the effects of such an attack, but when at a full stop it is utterly defenseless.

Retards in this thread not getting this. Not every vehicle needs to have extreme armor and protection. There are tanks and IFV that are for combat. This is basically the army’s club cart

        Anonymous

This is true, but I doubt the relevance in a modern conflict with small covert combat UAVs dropping small ordnance.

        >it's a taxi for behind the lines and not a fighting nor defensive vehicle
If that was true, why wouldn't they just adapt a commercial vehicle for use? This was clearly intended to be a fighting vehicle, but they fucked up the design so badly they had to change it's designation halfway through, and now it doesn't do that or it's original intended purpose very well.

I mean, they did adapt a commercial vehicle, but then added a lot of custom safety stuff completely negating any cost benefit outside of repairs.

          >they did adapt a commercial vehicle
Spending 6x base cost of the bare chassis is not "adapting" it's building a new vehicle using existing parts bins. Same thing car companies do when they make a new sub-model of vehicle. But because it's retarded Army generals behind the budgets, they act retarded and drive development costs into the stratosphere

            >Spending 6x base cost
will you nagger brained retards stop being so fucking retarded. the cost of each vehicle isn't $330k, that's just the cost of the entire program divided by the number of vehicles that the Army had ordered at the time.

            Anonymous

As much as I think the price is silly, that's an even sillier representation of what has transpired.

Why would a behind-the-lines taxi need to be air dropped from everything with wings or rotors? The whole program sounds like an exercise in wasting money and incompetent retards making expensive engineering decisions

            Island Hopping.
This is for a conflict with China, but clearly nobody in US defense has paid any attention to the actual capabilities of China, nor the manpower the US can muster vs China to plug any strategic disadvantage.

.. and than your shitty truck doesn't cost 300k but a million per piece.

Just take a fucking of the shelf truck and armor it up, done.

To be fair, being lightweight and off-road capable is extremely advantageous. The whole idea of this vehicle is for rapid deployment.
On the other hand, it will become a lemon because it should have been a truck. Or perhaps 3 smaller similar vehicles, because fitting a whole squad on one deathtrap was probably a bad idea.

It's not meant for any where near enemy contact, but you're right. There is no consideration for the *eventuality* of enemy infiltration, or even conventional warfare likely having a porous front line.

What the fuck kind of stupid ass Berkeley grad came up with this fucking design? I could literally imagine dudes strapped in the back getting double-tapped while screaming for the driver to slam on the gas, which they won't do in contact with the enemy. All someone has to do is park their goats in the middle of the road and at least half the guys in that shitbox are KIA in ten seconds. What a fucking catastrophe this government and military now is.

They would be better off buying Hiluxes from Japan and putting plate on them.

        a) they did, it's based of a Colorado ZR2 and b) it had to be capable of "nine passengers, a payload of 3,200 pounds (1,500 kg), transportable by external sling load by a Sikorksy UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, internal load/external lift by Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter, low-velocity air drop by Lockheed C-130 Hercules or Boeing C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft and exceptional mobility over all terrains allowing Infantry Brigade Combat Teams to move with their equipment over difficult terrain"

Absolutely exactly, and I think just like the HMMWV this vehicle will end up getting an armour package as soon as the reality of conflict arrives. And, just like the HMMWV in Iraqi service, being adapted in the field to account for immediate needs.

What's funny is this is designed for the kind of environment WWII supply trucks enjoyed, ie; being far from the action and merely transporting goods (in this case, grunts). Modern conflicts, particularly Armenia, Ukraine, but also Syria, Libya, Iraq etc show that "behind the lines" is not somewhere a military can act with impunity.
