Why do Turks drink?

Why do Turks seem to have something of a drinking culture despite being Muslim? What led to Turks prioritizing Alcohol over following Islam properly? Does the steppe environment have any influence on how much alcohol factors into their culture historically?

Only arabs and afghans autistically care about following orthodox Islam to the letter. Every other people that adopted islam, retained most of their cultural traditions and practices

Moroccans (who aren't Arabs) drink wine as well. Wouldn't be surprised if it's like the third most common drink after water and mint tea.

Some early jurisprudential Islamic schools only banned wine specifically.

Alawites also have a drinking culture.

      >sunni turks do not drink
if I remember correctly, according to Alcohol and Tobbacco Association of Turkey most alcohol consuming cities were "le sunni" (only in name, most of Turkey is literally secular) cities such as Ardahan, Tekirdağ or İzmir.

I said “seem to” for a reason. I’m well open to the idea that my assumption is mistaken.

Turks are like the Anglican equivalents to Islam. They are more secular no matter how hard Erdogan keeps building mosques. They just stay empty but Im sure he claims Aya Sofia is the busiest mosque in the world.

      >Why do Turks seem to have something of a drinking culture despite being Muslim?
Conservative religious Turks don’t drink. The ones that do are either ignorant of their own religion (which most people in Turkey are, despite being denominationally Muslim) or straight up Republican liberals left over from Ataturk’s reforms.

      >Does the steppe environment have any influence on how much alcohol factors into their culture historically?
No. This might have been true for fresh-off-the-steppe groups acclimatizing in an urban Muslim society, but most Turkish people aren’t ethnically Turkic and those that are are long acclimatized into sedentary Muslimhood.

      >Turks are like the Anglican equivalents to Islam.
They aren’t. They profess the most mainstream branch of Islam.

Something I regret is that I might have not properly clarified that I am referring to Turks in general, not just Anatolian Turks.

Makes no sense. So Rumelian Turks from the Balkans and Ottoman-descended people in the Middle East then?

During the Ottoman times there were a lot of christians in Constantinople, and they drank and were alcohol vendors. So it was available and people tried it, found out that drinking is fun and did it. A sultan made a law that vendors can't sell booze to muslims anymore, but it was too difficult to enforce.

Yes obviously Atatürk built the first beer factory and stuff, but they were drinking already in Ottoman times. I mean they have a national liquor rakı that they drink from Ottoman times onward

Why do so many Christians jerk off and have sex outside of marriage? People don't always follow their religion to the letter, go fricking figure.

There are different theologies in Islam. Turks are maturidi, which is basically the only one out of the big few that allow for followers to use their brain instead of total zombie-like submission.

Other big ones are Ashari, who think Allah can do whatever he wants so science is pointless and Athari, who are literalists and autistically follow every letter of the quran and hadiths
