The way their corporate structure works, they encourage googlers to flesh out their passion projects on google's time with google resources and these happen at different campuses independently of each other so you get instances of google promoting 4 different yet very similar chat apps with identical names.
Then you have google's very manipulative culture of giving you piss easy work the first 5 years you work there and then dumping shitloads of responsibilities on you after you've learned their systems well enough, many people take this opportunity to quit and fuck off with their fagman bucks to the middle of nowhere to larp as a homesteader, so you see projects meandering because they no longer have any real leadership as their project heads all quit, and if these projects don't have an immediate avenue for making money then they get discontinued.

No they're more like a parasitic entity. they have ads, search, trackers, and a software ecosystem to trap people in, but you can still live just fine without them.

They should accept reality and admit they can't innovate for shit anymore and should take the Microsoft approach of buying out good startups. Imagine if Alphabet bought out GitHub and LinkedIn.

Most Google offices are as big as 50+ other companies, so they are out in the middle of nowhere.

They also have some """smaller""" buildings mostly for meetups and important meetings in city centres.

because bean counters at google are literal subhumans.
    >hummm how come this rss feed does not generate as much money as our ads business, very curious, guess it's garbage so we have to kill it
it's not that much more complexe than that. it's the same reason valve does not spend much money on cs or dota, steam make them billions, cs or dota can't do that so they're worthless products in the eyes of npc from business schools.
android exist only because it's a data harvest tool otherwise they would have killed it a very long time ago.
you can work at google for 10 years without working on a single product that will be used as they kill most of the internal tools before they amount to anything because it's not a killer feature that will make them as much money as the ad business.
there are only two things you can do at google, work on ads or work on making brin and page immortal.

internal incentive structure. start a project, get promoted, move onto a new project
then the question is, why is their incentive structure like this when it has such an obvious outcome?
its because google enjoys being the bully on the playground. they always have projects spinning up and spinning down, it confuses the competitive landscape. if you think google will come and copy/paste your startup, you might just not do that startup
