That was not the tallest building in Nairobi on the 1950s (which I guess would have been the Parliament building). It is, however over 100 metres tall. Its almost twice the height of the 14-storey Lopez Serrano building in Havana. Not all floors are created equal.

A lot of this wealth was based on a surge of U.S. investment after WWII but your access to that was dependent on your political connections, so it was extremely corrupt and a lot of money that was supposed to be spent just disappeared into a black hole, so GDP looked great "on paper" but the infant mortality rate was a typical third-world basket case, children running around with parasites in their bellies, and only 2% of the rural population having access to eggs (weird since you'd think they'd have plenty of chickens).

It was kinda like the U.S. South as it was also segregated by race. And the Cuban revolution also had a strangely "luddite" dimension as there was a push to mechanize sugar agriculture which threatened a lot of rural agrarian jobs without anything to substitute them with.

All the best architecture in Cuba is from the late 1800s and very early 1900s, turn of the century neo-classical architecture. It looks like a Caribbean version of Buenos Aires, very European looking, moreso the the US. So how did they build all that impressive infrastructure decades earlier if their wealth was based on WWIi? GDP doesn't just look great on paper, you could actually see it that wealth in the built environment of Cuba. Even to this day Cuban cities are more impressive than most cities of Latin America.

        Anonymous

I'm not as familiar with pre-WWII history of Cuba, but apparently it was similar with sugar exports to the United States in the early 20th century and I'd assume some of the proceeds from those exports would be recapitalized in buildings. I guess the problem is looking at pretty buildings instead of the people though, because who makes revolution? People do, not buildings. So why did they make a revolution?

Interesting chart showing GDP per capita, which had barely changed since 1900. Also you see a big decline during the Great Depression as sugar exports to the U.S. declined, then a resumption after WWII which I think created an excruciating economic "contradiction" in the society, so suddenly there's all this new American investment and money flowing in but it's orbiting around a politically-connected and clientistic elite in the cities (particularly Havana).
