Mormonism is an *extremely* American faith, in the same way that weird pseudo-Catholic movement in the Phillipines is Filipino, or how various Protestant branches were shaped by the cultures of Central/Northern Europe, and so on. And, bluntly, American culture has become consumerist enough that official church merch is not so weird a concept anymore.
