Because Lincoln wanted to rebind them to the Union, as their independence set an extremely dangerous precedent.

Because the south wanted to leave so they could maintain slavery, political power, and culture

How? They illegally occupied a fort. Thus the aggressor.

        >Illegally occupied
The fort wasn't South Carolina's, it was federal land. Now if they really wanted it they could have negotiated a sale of the land and fort, but otherwise it is the property of the union.

The United States had no interest in negotiating or compromising with South Carolina or the Confederacy over the fort, or any fortification anywhere in the south.

Fort Sumter was supposed to be surrendered but instead aggressive action was provoked as a means of galvanizing the Union.

There are "people" on this board who will defend this. The cattle wars between oil/rail barons and homesteaders was bad enough. Imagine a bunch of naggers on the frontier running people off their land for their massa.
