Jesus / his followers believed the Apocalypse was going to happen in their lifetimes.
Matthew 24:34
>Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
Christbros...how do we spin this one?
Some Christians argue that the Son isn't privy to the Father's plans, but this contradicts John 10:30 wherein Jesus says "I and the Father are one."
The truth is probably that the real historical Jesus didn't consider himself a literal God in flesh, which was probably a later development. The earliest scriptures (we have) were written decades after the crucifixion, after all. Who's to say though?
Eureka! Just pretend "this generation" means "some unspecified time before humanity goes extinct"! Reasonable people will find this infinitely convincing!
Easy: preterism.
The events of Revelation were not fulfilled and heaven and earth did not pass away. Preterism is the dumbest shit ever, even worse than the JW's "Jesus returned invisibly in 1914".
Distinguish between full and partial preterism
Evolution by natural selection over billions of years is what's true, and there is no reason or purpose to life on this planet.
Reddit moment
I'm sorry if you can't handle the truth of reality and have to spread lies about a magic israelite and his paradise in the sky so you don't cry yourself to sleep at night. I've accepted it.
They usually say this
bunch of nonsense, but I've also heard another cope about how he was only referring to his showing his epic divine form to his disciples, not to the Second Coming.
The greek word for generation doesn't mean a single living generation, it usually means a blood lineage or family. In this case it means the lineage of Christians in the apostolic Church. Essentially it's saying the Church will survive to the end times.
The Greek word for generation in Matthew 24:34 is used to describe a singular generation whenever it's used elsewhere in the Bible though.
Where are you getting that it's referring to a single generation?
See
And read the context for the other verses
Acts 13:36, for example, is very explicitly referring to a singular generation
Yeah Acts is the only one that explicitly refers to a single generation. The others could be interpreted either way.
Actually we're both wrong. Acts is referring clearly to his blood lineage
For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption
Not sure where you're getting blood lineage from. "In his own generation" implies exactly that.

You don't even speak Greek.
AD 70
Can you elaborate?
It's a meme cope where they pretend that "coming back with his rewards to establish his kingdom" meant "Jerusalem is going to be destroyed" -- which was in 70. I know...
Partial preterism
The events of Jesus' prophecy were fulfilled in the siege of jerusalem. Some, but not all of the book of revelation discusses the same event.
The language matches the book of Daniel which likewise pointed to an earthly conflict with apocalyptic language
Speaking of preterism:
>Judea was occupied by Rome during the advent of Christianity in the 1st century.
>Those israelites who resisted Roman rule were killed while those who gave in where spared.
>Slaves were marked on the hands and condemned men were marked on the head by Roman authorities - which is where the idea of the "Mark of the Beast (Nero)" comes from.
Nero is the Beast (Satan) of Revelation.
>When you actually look at the original text, you'll see that in this passage, the letters of 666 are actually written in Hebrew, which places a higher significance on numbers meaning words and words meaning numbers than ancient Greek. The writer was very clearly trying to tell us something.
>And sure enough, if you translate the Hebrew spelling of 666, you actually spell out Neron Kesar - the Hebrew spelling of Nero Caesar.
>Even if you take the alternative spelling of the number of the beast, which has been found in several early Biblical texts as being written 616, you can translate that out as being Nero Cesar.
It could only be a coincidence if just 666 or 616 could be translated out to Nero's name, but not both.
There's an argument that a scribe knew the number referred to Nero and made what he thought was a correction to the other number, validating the early identification of Nero as that beast
It's possible. The history surrounding Revelation is by far my favorite aspect of the Bible to study. It's a shame most Christians never learn about it because, for some reason, Churches tend to shy away from teaching historical context of scripture
I think it's the most over studied in charismatic and fundamentalist churches, just with bad hermeneutics. There's an urgency involved in identifying current events with prophecy that makes people tune in to your sect's teachings.
To be fair, you can't really blame modern Christians for that when their Messiah was an Apocalyptic preacher in every sense of the term. The saddest thing about Christianity is that these people are genuinely all hoping the world ends in their lifetime.
>Jesus / his followers believed the Apocalypse was going to happen in their lifetimes.
>Matthew 24:34
I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
I see you have some replies to this and I would bet that one of them is trying to exploit the word "generation" to mean something other than what it obviously means in this context. But Jesus was even more clear in this instance:
>For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
Matthew 16:27-28
One of the big questions people had for Jesus was why he wasn't the warrior messiah they expected. In fact, this is when Jesus told Peter "get behind me Satan" -- Peter was questioning this, as to why Jesus wasn't fulfilling the warrior end of things. And his answer was that he was going to come back and do all that and bring his rewards and 10,000 of his angels with him. So this is what he was referring to. People try to twist this scripture as well to mean something other than what it obviously does. But they will do what they will do. Jesus was very clear and he didn't return like he said he would.
>Apocalypse was going to happen in their lifetimes.
No that comes after he comes and reigns for 1000 years, hasn't happened yet.
[Rev 20:2 KJV] 2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
see all the sodomites everywhere you look? Satan is still in power.
The Bible says he sat on God's throne and began reigning right away in the 1st century.
>in heaven
So what's he been doing for 2,000 years up in heaven as king of the universe?
Acting as high priest.
Why 2,000 years
He is preparing a place for everyone who will be saved.
He wouldnt have to do that if he just came 2,000 years ago and put an end to it all. There's already 200 billion people from the past he could save. Every year millions of new people are born. He apparently wants the suffering to continue and babies to die of cancer and parents to suffer.
He works in mysterious ways, who am I to explain the mind of God?
Read https://www.blueletterbible.org/kjv/mat/13/1/ss0/rl0/s_942001
Jesus was explaining the past 2000 years, the gospel is like a seed being planted.
>He works in mysterious ways
Stopped reading
I've legitimately heard some Christians argue that there are two-thousand+ year old people living today who were alive in Jesus's time just to make sense of that verse
Yeah that's always a sad one when I hear that excuse. It just goes to show that they'll say anything to bridge a gap.
Time for everyone on earth to receive the gospels and have a chance of salvation. Now when judgement day comes there's no excuse
>b b b but I'm just a poor chinaman, what would I know about Christ?
Bullshit. Your people had a chance at salvation and decided to slaughter missionaries and embrace atheism instead.
>Time for everyone on earth to receive the gospels
What about the 5 million kids per year in third world countries that die from diarrhea and starvation every year? Did they have a chance to learn the gospel? What about people that have no education and can't read?
It's posts like this
that make me glad it's not real and people like you will eat shit in the end.
Children go to heaven
God will make himself known
>Muh children
They shouldn't have killed the missionaries.
It’s illustrated best in the section of the Noah’s Ark story when Noah sends the dove out to find dry land. Let me reproduce it here so you can read it and see for yourself.
>"And he sent out the dove from him to see if the waters had abated from the surface of the ground. But the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him to the ark, for the waters were on the surface of the whole earth. And he put out his hand and took her and brought her to himself into the ark. And he waited yet another seven days, and again he sent out the dove from the ark. And the dove came to him toward evening time, and there in her beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the waters had abated from the earth. And he waited yet another seven days and sent out the dove, and she did not return to him again." (Genesis 8:8-12)
Here are some New Testament verses to show some major similarities between the two narratives.
>"And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of heaven have roosts, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." (Matthew 8:20)
> "And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea." (Matthew 14:25)
> "And Jesus answered and said to him, Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in the heavens. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it." (Matthew 16:17-18)
I see Jesus first coming in the beginning as the spirit brooding upon the face of the deep. Next, coming to find life in the apostles. Finally, he will be forever on the earth and will stay with us forever.
Why 2000 years? The days of God are like millenia. What he can accomplish in one day is greater than what man can do in one day.
So that everyone could be saved.
Doesn't even make sense.
More people are born and die without hearing the gospel than people that become Christian. The longer he waits, the worse it gets.
It does if you study scripture, which is something you would do if you had any faith.
You're retarded, sorry.
At least being mentally disabled isn't a sin.
>study
Show me your thesis, and I'll tell you if it's convincing.
God synthesized the word so that I don't need to have a thesis.
>I made it up.
We know.
I didn't make it up.
Especially since Christianity is on the decline.
two more weeks
Why did YHWH wait 4,000 years to come up with a "salvation" plan??
He works in mysterious ways
reminder no matter how many times you tell these scoffers the truth about scripture they will continue to lie through their chattering teeth about it
they are not interested in dialogue, all they want to do is attack the church
just call them homosexuals and spam their threads with pictures of cats or whatever, don't forget to sage ofc
Eventually on their deathbed while they are suffering, they will remember the love that they rejected and all their filthy lies they spread, and the hatred they spewed.
Does that make you happy?
No, it's just the truth.
Jesus is not love. He lets little children suffer with cancer and brain tumors in agony for months and then die. He's a piece of shit and a false messiah.
Those little children probably have more faith than you.
And he just lets them suffer. Never answers a single prayer. You don't know shit about the Bible, you're a clueless moron.
Yep they suffer like everyone suffers. He doesn't have to answer any prayers. I probably don't know that much about the bible but I'm a nice guy.
You've probably never even read it. Go fuck yourself.
hehe, I'm on the internets you can't do shit
Go worship your nasty fucking israelitegod you good guy loser.
Yahya returned first. Isa was second. Muhammad then Ali.
