He flat out said he was in special forces but can't go into specifics. Which is a lie on top of the lie.

No, he said he worked with special forces.
Chances are he was telling lies for fun, but he never flat out said he was special forces.

            >Asked about his wartime exploits in an interview in 2011 he said: ‘Let’s just say I was in special forces and leave it at that. People can read into that what they like.’

Saxons were told to convert to Christianity.
The claimed they did, but then went back on it and revolted shouting WE WUZ PAGAN.
Thus the emperor had to go back to quell the chimpout and remind the Saxons their place.

That’s not true. He was good friends with the Slavic pagan tribe called Abodrites

      > The following year AD 795 saw some northern Saxons, though not necessarily the same people as in the previous year, again rise up, perhaps resisting forcible expulsion from their territory north of the Elbe. Witzan, King of the pagan Slav Abodrites, whom Charlemagne had invited to take over this territory, was apparently killed in battle by Saxons in AD 795. Witzan was succeeded by his son Drożko who maintained the alliance between pagan Abodrites and Christian Carolingians. Peace may not have yet firmly established in Saxony but future disturbances were localized and quickly contained. In AD 798, for example, there was a short-lived revolt by some of the northernmost Saxons, almost certainly resisting deportation. In response Charlemagne took advantage of his alliance with Prince Drożko of the Abodrites. Together their forces crushed the rebels at the first battle of Bornhöved, obliging these northerners to submit and give hostages against their future good behaviour. Towards the end of the war, mass deportations of the northernmost Saxon populations and the handing of their ancestral homeland over to an allied, though still pagan, Slav tribe broke Saxon resistance.

It was actually a retaliation for ambushing his men.

    > The Frankish commanders Adalgis, Gallo and Worad had reached or were nearing the river Elbe when they learned that a Saxon uprising had started behind them, apparently targeting Christian priests in particular. According to the Revised Frankish Annals, ‘they abandoned the route by which they had been intending to advance against the Slavs and marched at speed, with the east Frankish troops, towards the place where they had heard the Saxons had gathered.’

    > … It seems most likely that Widukind lured this part of the Carolingian army into launching a sudden charge, which appeared to the three commanders to be the right tactic at the time. Under this scenario the three were drawn into a trap or ambush in which the advantages enjoyed by well-equipped, well-trained and disciplined cavalry were simply swamped by the Saxon infantry’s greater numbers.

    > When news of this defeat reached Charlemagne’s court, the king ‘judged that there must be not a moment’s delay; swiftly collecting together an army, he entered Saxony.’

    > In fact, even many Saxons may have been shocked by their own success and realized that the consequences would be dire. So, as Charlemagne marched north, many Saxon leaders assembled near the already significant fortified settlement of Verden, close to the confluence of the Weser and Aller rivers. However, they had not gathered to fight but to surrender. When Charlemagne arrived, these Saxon leaders handed over as many of the rebels as could be found and identified. Widukind of Westphalia was not there. He and his immediate followers had already fled north.

      have conquered Anatolia
So he was going to march all the way through byzantium to conquer a piece of land completely isolated from the rest of his empire, surrounded by both Arabs and Greeks, with no particular gain?
Anon, why would he ever do that
have finished the business in Italy and conquered the south and Sicily
And get into a war with an Ascendant Byzantium while larger problems exist in his horthern border?
      have conquered Scandinavia & England
England, a land of good christians who haven't sttayed from the church, and Scandinavia, a land completely seperated from Charlemagne's king right now, that would be hard to hold?
      have conquered the Baltic region
The baltic, completely separated from his empire by Poland, Bohemia, and Saxony?
went for the swamps and moors of SAXONY
Saxony that had been raiding and harrassing the franks for centuries, continues to resist conversion, and would go on to become the riches province of the HRE?
Anon, please stick to paradox games
