I think it was important that Harry saw the house as his home, otherwise it would've lost effectivness. The moment he knew that it wasn't his home anymore since he was an adult, the house lost the protection.

One, Hogwarts doesn't do summer students, two Dumbledore felt he should be raised away from the Wizarding world where he would be hounded all his life, and three he asked them in the letter he left with Harry to raise him as family, which they did not, and he has words for them over that in Book 6 (where he also says Harry was at least spared the "appalling damage" they wrought on Dudley).

In any case he was safe from Voldemort's followers there, and in the years after Voldemort's first fall, they were still at large and active in numbers, it took years for the Aurors to track them all down and imprison or kill them. Some of them were cowardly turncoats but plenty of those stayed loyal to Voldemort and would have gunned for Harry.

Dursleys know only because Petunia's sister was a witch, and she ended up disclosing this to Vernon. They spent the rest of their lives trying to make sure no one found out they were related to "weirdos". They're not in cahoots with the parliament either, only the prime minister, and for all we know they have to submit to a memory charm when they leave office, but in any case they would come off as complete loons if they ever did try to claim there were real wizards in the country. How would he prove it? They don't leave a trace. The prime minister only meets the Minister of Magic alone and very seldom. The one in office during the books only meets Fudge like four times total over years, and Scrimgeour once.

The families of Muggleborns are trusted to keep it to themselves, and frankly they would, given the above. Who would believe you?

In the books, Hermione is constantly shown to be book-smart and logical but bad at thinking "outside the box" or "on her feet" but can also be exceptionally stupid at times of stress (such as nearly failing the obstacle course in third year Defence when her boggart is McGonnagal telling her she's failed every subject) - conversely, Harry is a mildly above-average student (mostly thanks to Hermione) but absolutely exceptional when it comes to the areas Hermione falls short in - it's why he's constantly able to escape situations that would otherwise result in his death and duel wizards with decades more experience than him

Of course, if you've only watched the movies, you'd get fucking none of this because the movies are actually about how Hermione is PERFECT with NO FLAWS and Harry and Ron are the two bumbling idiots she got stuck with

They also take all of Ron's good qualities and give them to Hermione

And take away what remains of Ron's good qualities and simply destroy them for no reason, e.g. when Snape is telling Hermione to stop being a know-it-all, Ron in the book says "Well you asked the question, why did you ask if you didn't want someone to tell you?" whereas in the movie he basically agrees with Snape that Hermione is a bitch

the most offensive part of this was in book three where Ron with a broken leg, green in the face, stands up straight and says to Sirius Black, a man he has been raised from birth to fear almost as much as Voldemort himself, "if you want Harry you will have to get through me"
But in the movies of course its Hermione that gets that line, while Ron lies there being useless.

It probably just protected Voldemort from touching him, but he still wouldn't be able to kill Harry with abracadabra.

Voldemort wouldn't be crazy enough to attack him in the school with Dumbledore there, and the ministry believed his return was fake news, so he was capitalizing on that.

A poor wizard is just lazy. The Weasleys were lazy. You can infinitely replicate food and you can fix anything in your house with an easy spell. Molly could make dishes and knitting do themselves but couldn’t wave her wand to fix that shambly fuck up of a shack? Ridiculous. Also makes those super cute little “handmade” sweaters pretty lame since she just charmed some needles to do it for her.

Super wealth like the Malfoys is one thing but the only excuse for a wizard to live in poverty is extreme laziness or apathy.

        Anonymous

Nothing indicates that the Weasleys were poor in the traditional sense, they had plenty of food, they just lacked in magical supplies you had to buy.
They didn't really lack space, but there was a limit to what magic could do. You can't just conjure up a palace out of nowhere, but you can expand your house, and you can buy some cheap tents and make them roomy enough with magic.
Really the only example I can think of that sucks is Ron's robes for the ball, surely she could have created something better instead of buying that horrid thing.

Transfigurations aren't permanent (and the ones that are are VERY hard to do) and being exposed to nearby magic for a long time will wear it away

Magical repairs only work really well on simple things, the more complicated the object is the harder the repair and the less strong the repair will be. Most of the wizards we see in the movies are exceptionally powerful (e.g. Dumbledore) and their feats don't translate at all to the standard wizard - non-verbal spells alone are really fucking difficult even for basic first-year spells.

Also you cannot infinitely replicate food, it's some rule or something that Hermione talks about when they're camping - e.g. if you get an apple and turn it into a really big apple, that really big apple will still only have the nutritional value of the original apple. Any conjured food will have literally zero nutritional value. That's why they still need to cook everything. (the meals in the school are cooked at the school and then teleported onto the tables)

Of course the movies don't mention any of this stuff

Sounds like magic is pretty useless and that a middle class muggle has a higher standard of living than all but the richest wizards. Hermione wasted her potential going to Hogwarts.

            Anonymous

It's more that wizards (especially purebloods) are kind of stuck in the past and don't really understand just how quickly muggles have been developing

Sure, magic isn't great for instantly making some sort of amazing structure, but it can sure as shit make it easier - you don't need a crane to move steel beams if you have two wizards who can levitate it together (or one sufficiently powerful wizard), You don't need a blowtorch and an hour to cut it to size when you can just overpower a cutting charm. Hell, you don't even need to rent a truck to get it to the worksite - you can shrink it, lighten it, put it in your pocket and then just cancel the charms when you get there.
You don't need to wait 5 minutes for your microwave to reheat your food when you can do a quick charm.
You don't need to clean/dry your clothes for hours when you can do it with two spells.

The main thing wizards lack is creativity.

This was a children's book that the author tried to make more mature with sequels. Him living under the stairs with his awful aunt and uncle, the gold coins, the 4 houses, quidditch, almost everything doesn't make sense but is fine for a fun kids book. Him having to live with a blood relative of his mother is absurd and clearly was not the case at the start but shit like this needs explaining if you suddenly start to take the books seriously, but Rowling does a horrible job of it. This is a series for children that becomes awful after the first couple of books
