Why did Franco soften his role?

If he wanted to continue his authoritarian state why did he never take any steps to broaden his party's popular and instead disbanding all the paramilitary wings and youth wings in the 50s.

Franco was never an ideologue and was extremely pragmatic. He was just a conservative living in the 19th century thinking that the church and a king would continue in the same manner. Franco never made any attempts to cement his regime either or build any sort of “mass movement” with the populace either.

He probably would have done if the fascists won in WWII, but it got delegitimised as an ideology so went down the standard military junta route.

Democracy is calories above 3000. War is calories under 2000.
Spain perfectly follows the rule. Democracy is a calorie rule.

Yet you can't find a single exception. You are a perfect example of why his is a midwit board.
I say something obvious, that democracy is just calories above 3000, and you complain.

Because he had never liked populist ideologies like fascism in the first place. He was a naive Catholic monarchist, who thought that "muh king, muh church" was a solution to all problems of modernity.

      >"muh king, muh church" was a solution to all problems of modernity.
He wasn't wrong though. His only mistake was giving crown to the wrong person

Isn't that just an innate problem of monarchy as a system? I like the aesthetics and noblesse of monarchy, but not having an explicit ideological component leaves it vulnerable to subversion.

arguably Franco was equally a Titoist. both strongmen and pragmatists whose reaction to separatists was "blam blam blam".
Franco was superior to Tito inasmuch as the Spanish state still exists and the Yugoslav state... not so much. But that's less ideology and more basic competence (and that the Spaniards seem to be innately more evolved than the Yugoslavs).
