the main one is that Florida's a hell of a lot more swampy, not as good for agriculture, and you have to get through the South to get there, which until recently would've mostly been an overland trip.

The Seminole fighting like hell against the US in the everglades didn't exactly help, either.

I love Florida, but it does not have nice weather for daily life. It’s very hot and very humid for about 80% of the year. It’s great for going to the beach, but you can’t be at the beach every day. Being in a suit and tie in 90 degree heat with high humidity is awful. That’s why it didn’t grow much until AC became common. Living down there without AC sounds incredibly miserable. That plus hurricanes can often ruin infrastructure and set the development of areas back.
California on the other hand has a much milder climate, from what I can tell though I’ve only been there once in the summer. It also doesn’t have hurricanes like Florida.

I actually find deserts quite beautiful, but california having a lot of variance from north to south means there's a lot to see and several different biomes, few states can compare in that level of diversity, I can certainly think of many states with a few biomes in it but California takes the cake I think.

They had pretty much ruined their farmland in about 30-40 years so they switched to fruit trees at the turn of the century which also drastically increased their need for farm workers which is why historically they've had so much illegal immigration. California switching to fruit production directly coincides with illegal immigration into the state. This ceaseless quest for profit is the reason why they have no problem draining all the water to keep the farms going

Florida is DOA without air conditioning. Population in 1900 was below Colorado.
California had San Francisco as the dominant West Coast port during the 1800s, and the Central Valley for agriculture. Los Angeles was another good port location, had oil, and gained Hollywood. Even in the 1930s, California was a center of aviation research. By that point, it already had the UCs, Stanford, Caltech, USC, etc. giving it a solid educational base and a high level attractiveness to many of the world's leading minds (Einstein frequently visited).
During WWII, California was a natural hub for aviation and for the Pacific War effort, which contributed massively to development: it leapt the state rankings from #5 to #2 during the 1940s.
California benefitted massively from the Cold War.
1950s saw the beginnings of Silicon Valley, which acted as a flywheel for the state.
Expanded Pacific trade enhanced the logistics sector in Los Angeles-Long Beach.
    And so on.

Florida is a Southern state, with all that entails in terms of political economy.
Its 'development' during the 20th Century was a never-ending series of real-estate scams targeting Northerners.
      It also benefitted from WWII.
Air conditioning made it viable, which is why the population, which hit 1 million in the 1930s, exploded after that point.
California's natural foreign partner was East Asia, while Florida's was Latin America. Latam didn't do as well as East Asia, but it still sent business, money, trade, and millions of immigrants to Florida.

that's actually a really good point, Florida's a southern state so the north probably robbed it too. Most southern states weren't out of debt to the north until the 1920's which is why the population started increasing then

From the Civil War to the 1920s, Florida's population increased by a factor of 7.
There weren't any 'debts to the northern states'. As parts of the US, tax revenues from Southern states contributed to general debt service, but there wasn't any special levy upon them. The South's economic problems were caused by its bad economic model.

I grew up in Florida and settled in Vermont for that reason. I had to go
Two days without AC in my Florida cracker house (it’s built off the ground under the assumption air moving underneath the building would keep it vented) but it was fricking brutal like no heat I’ve ever experienced, it was actually cooler outside. Florida’s growth almost perfectly coincides with the adoption of air conditioning. You can immediately tell who is “old Florida” because they are the most rootin’ tootin’ hillbilliest hollering hillbillies you’ll ever meet, it’s like the heat literally warped their brains.

I always thought that for California, being on the other side of the country from the Boston-NY-DC megalopolis is what helped it stand on its own and morph into the largest US economy?

If you think about it, both the Northeast and California exert a "gravitational pull" on the adjacent states. If you're running a business in Georgia and need to expand your operations, wouldn't there come a time where it makes sense to move your operations to NY, as your business starts to scale up.
I'm not sure that the Northeast sucks business out of Florida, but it seems to inherently make sense that the two hubs of the American economy would be on the opposite side of the country.

Also, California is huge and can throw weight around with its electoral votes. And lucked out with the 1970s tech boom flourishing in Silicon Valley.

What say you, Americans? Did I get it right?
