Why can't Bitcoin be the only coin? THE Cryptocurrency.
Millions of scamcoins have made crypto reputation rock bottom. It has been tightly associated with retarded gambling.
Cryptocurrency as a concept will never be taken seriously as an alternative to "real currencies" because of that

Reason why I'm sticking with sylo, it is currently cheap and a good option for a DeFi play. Their integration within the metaverse also makes it a good option to consider.

It's not like Bitcoin is perfect, there are issues with transaction speed etc. The first generation of "shitcoins" were trying to build a better mousetrap and overcome those limitations
The with the development of Ethereum people realized you can use the same "decentralized" transaction ledger scheme for other "utility" purposes. Then finally people realized you don't even need to claim utility, you can just use that scheme to generate a virtual chuck e cheese token and people will give you money for it for FOMO. And here we are today
In the long run I think 99% of cryptos will die out, BTC won't become the world's reserve or whatever delusions BTC maxxies have but it will stay an important multitrillion dollar asset "class" for probably the next few centuries

imagine what the price of Bitcoin would be if altcoins didn't exist, more people would have made it and way less people would have lost money.

  9. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

i'll let you in on a secret: it is.
but that doesn't mean it's going to make you the most money.

outside of coping altmaxis, everyone knows every alt's days are numbered. every alt needs a narrative to justify it's existence once that initial pump and dump is over.
some alts like ethereum can leech of the narrative of other coins, and become a "meta-alt", able to survive for much longer because of it, and generally in bull markets ethereum performs much better than bitcoin because it's able to capture this alt market mania more directly.

if all you want to do is buy something and not have to pay attention, then your only option has always been bitcoin, but that's never been the most successful strategy in any market. the sole exception is for early adopters who were able to buy the apex asset at a price that rivaled nearly every alt's return since then, but those times are over.

because you can't make money if bitcoin is the only cryptocoin
the whole crypto thing rests on the idea of pulling off infinite amounts of ponzi schemes by convicing CS nerds with disposable income to invest in the newest, "totally not just a meme" substitute to bitcoin. it's downright criminal, even worse than scamming people into buying penny stocks (since penny stocks at least are are shares of real companies which could give you real profits, even if chances are slim)

If you could time travel to restart Bitcoin, but with a few small changes, what would they be?

Having some incentive for people to attack and kill copycat coins would go a a long way to establishing Bitcoin solidly. E.g. bounties for destroying servers, or bringing heavy legal proceedings and harassment against devs who want to enrich themselves rather than support Bitcoin. But that would need to be paired with a proper open and free governance procedure such that the users are actually in control, and can make improvements as needed, such as raising the blocksize.
One improvement proposal might be Ethereum style smart contracts. After a year or so of BTC on-chain approved vetting, Ethereum would become turned on as sidechain to Bitcoin.
All on the value would accrue in Bitcoin, and it would actually be hard money.
The situation now is a fiat situation where information infinite coin printing is going on, with 5000 different blockchians with extremely minor differences diluting the coin supply.
Also, incentives to pump the adoption side, bounties for new tech such as NFC payments in store (it was new in 2014 and Bitcoin could have had a huge tech advantage to drive adoption if it had been able to get devs working on software for that rather than having the incentive be for them to make their own copycat clone of Bitcoin)
And incentive fund for 'boots on the ground' sales force targeting merchants in counties with high inflation.
All of these rely on the governance model working well, we already have a miners tax to incentivse the system to keep running just add another few % tax to incentivse the other extremely necessary (with hindsite) activities to secure Bitcoin as a hard asset.

The problem for bitcoin is that it has actually embraced becoming a scamcoin ponzi itself. People liked the gains too much and forgot what it was all about. Eventually when people are really sick of all the shit, Monero will stand out as THE cryptocurrency.
