Why cant a new pagan religion be made?

Why can’t a new pagan religion be made? I think the idea that religions are only legitimate if they were made up before the enlightenment/scientific revolution is kind of silly because it’s basically just proving atheists right. I think saying that neo-pagans can be nothing but larpers casts a huge shadow of doubt over all religions, because unless magic, miracles and gods existed 2000 yr ago but not now for some reason, all major religions are just larp sessions that only derive legitimacy from being old and their origins not being able to be scientifically scrutinized. I see a ton of Christians accuse neo-pagans of LARP and to me they just sound like atheists. It would be way smarter to call neo-pagans demon worshippers or something.

      >Why can’t a new pagan religion be made?

Neo-Pagan groups typically form in protest against institutions (usually religious ones at that) and a *true* honest to god religious movement can only succeed if it seeks to become an institution itself. An entity that formally establishes and cements itself as an aspect and part of society and not something kicking it's heels in the fricking corner of the house party all alone. A religious movement needs a body of theological work (philosophy, mythology, ritual), but it also needs political momentum, a basic business model, and a means to punish and reward people even if that's just via social means.

People feel less and less of their moral, spiritual, and ethical principles being represented by Chrisianity so the public desire for a "new pagan religion" is absolutely there but it's yet to be capitalized on.
With that said: This Anon isn't even wrong. The development of divergent folk religion and national cultural institutions has really been compromised and outcompeted by the spectacle of consooooomerism, the false promise of "ethical brands", climate change activism, and political arm-chair tomfoolery. All these things in some way or another essentially fill the peg-hole in a person's brain left behind by religion in some way or another.

To put all of this into motion, maybe suggest a way to move forward, and annoyingly cite an example everybody and their dog uses: Meji Restoration Shinto.

Shintoism only exists today to make the Japanese feel Japanese. Shintoism is an anthology of all the Japanese folklore & fairytales mashed together into a single 'book' with the leather bindings, cover, and methodology organized by Buddhism. This, for the most part, was an artificial/fabricated decision mandated by the government for nationalistic patriotic reasons (at the time to deify the emperor and zog people out), but this practice can still be used today.
If you wanted to make a "new" pagan religion I think it'd be best to wholesale plagarize this entire process and fabricate a Religious organization with the explicit purpose of making a unified "National Spiritual Mythos" that the entire citizenship can easily & casually participate in a non-confrontational manner, ideally feel ENTITLED to participate in, and hopefully in the future give a more substenant body to patriotic virtue signaling.

You're just comparing pre WW2 vs post WW2 values/ideas. Anyway, you can make a "new pagan religion" but it would be more like a cult.

A lot of the more conservative christians do call neopagans demon worshippers, just check the American Conservative. Anyways, while there are demon worshippers and they are dangerous, most pagans I do believe are worshippers of good gods. I'm not totally on either polytheism or monotheism's side personally.

    neo paganism is just paganism.

just like anarcho capitalism / anarcho communism are just capitalism and communism, respectively.

adding neo or anarcho as a prefix doesn't change its fundamental meaning.

and in that respect, it would render your argument invalid, because paganists also worship and revere ancient gods, traditions and practices.

    >Why can’t a new pagan religion be made?
Because it wouldn't be "pagan" in the sense of pre-Christian European religions, which were really just a series of rituals that had to be done in very specific ways perfectly otherwise they'd actually bring misfortune to the practitioner. That's the essence of paganism - the ritual, not belief in the supernatural. It didn't matter what a person believed as long as they performed the proper rites. Seeing as there's no way to properly do these rituals now that the full knowledge of them has been lost (at least most of them), there's no way to properly practice paganism as pagans understood it. Also a lot of neo-pagans haven't even TRIED to really practice historical paganism drawing from what historical sources we do have, but chose instead to make most or all of it up entirely. They were doing this 100 years ago with people like Guido von List and they continued doing it all the way up until now. If you think all religions are made up that's fine, but to me anyway older religions seem much more developed and believable.

But didn't it inevitably change with time anyway?

        Anonymous

Perhaps, but it's nothing close to the situation now where it's been almost completely lost. They were building upon what already existed before them passed down from generation to generation. I guess you can go by what little sources we have and plenty do, but like I said a lot neo-pagans just make shit up that is in direct contradiction with what we DO know about historical paganism -- hence the LARPing accusation. At least, that's why I would call a lot of them LARPers (not all of them necessarily).

That kek homosexualry was a primordial one. The problem is that religion develops memetically, but we are too advanced for it to still work that way. Thus any new religion will be a forced meme. And that doesn't work out either.
