New Zealand launch Private Sector rockets and they dont even have a real space program

Because they're on the bottom of the plane. They can't launch a rocket upside down. They'd miss the moon entirely

We could easily afford and have a space program, however our government is so incompetent that any space program they managed would be completely shit.
They'd spend probably $250 million on rockets and $3-5 billion ensuring all the equipment used gender neutral language and there was a diverse team of LGBT and First nations people with do nothing jobs working on the program and a further 5-10 billion on giving money to rent seeking shitholes like Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Vanatu for climate change caused by the rocket launches.
The end result would be an incredibly shit program that never got off the ground and in the end it would have been much more cost effective to just pay someone else to launch the shit into space.

India has one because it can't risk having it's access to the US controlled GPS system cut off, same reason China developed their own program. If you don't have your own space program you have to use the GPS system that is controlled by big shithead USA and risk having your access to it cutoff/sanctioned over any reason they pull out of their arse.

Once upon a time Australia hosted the British space program's launches. Britain no longer launches rockets.

If you are away from equator you can't launch shit

Provably this. Acceleration due to gravity is lower in higher latitudes

You can prove it using a simple pendulum

So launching stuff requires less energy and is cheaper near the poles

Its risk aversion. Not exactly stupid Australia has close to zero technical depth in rockets, Libya or Iraq would have more technical depth. And failure risk/loss is fairly high. The UK recently tried to have a space program, they imported absolutely everything from the US except for the spaceport, and it still failed costing a lot of government money. Australia should be starting on a ballistic missile development program, it needs it from weapons parity perspective. Many older Australians are still with the legacy assumption western, smart, forward industrialized and modern is them but this is not the case.

    1. - We dont need one, we can just contract with other space agencies for placing a satellite in orbit

    2. - We can't afford it just yet, and cannot manufacture all the required hardware on our own.
We can barely manufacture anything these days, since we have outsourced most of our industries (our biggest mistake)
