the only function of the hinge is to break

      Anonymous

yeah my first thought on seeing this thing is wondering how much force it takes to break the hinge if you bend it the wrong way by opening it too hard

the weakpoint it's not the hinge; it's the fucking touchscreen that cracks right in the crease... not even the display, just the digitizer/whatever's the top layer

yeah my first thought on seeing this thing is wondering how much force it takes to break the hinge if you bend it the wrong way by opening it too hard

      Expensive
      Not durable or reliable
Heavy and small battery relative to its weight

Too expensive for something that will get creases within a year
I think they're the next logical step for phones but that technology still needs improvement to be reliable

      >finally reach a point in technology where devices are solid state and have no moving parts
      >massive innovations to get to this point

      >create an EDC device with the crux of being a hinge that can break

      brilliant

Even chinese foldable phones have been durability-tested with more than 400,000 folds, you'd have to use it for 10 years for it to break.

and yet it still has no function other than to break.

Ah yes, let me pay a few hundred less so that China can spy on all my data. What a trade off chang!

    >no added value
    >bulkier in your pocket when folded
Only advantageous for the double sized vertical folders, but even then the aspect ratio means youre still watching videos the same size as if you just turn your phone sideways

and now there's a big visible crease in the screen right down the middle, too

A slate that folds in half to a little square is gay. But a tablet that folds into a slate is awesome.

Because those are just same size than normal phones, those cost more, they take more space in pocket (being thick square and not thin slab) and they have line over the viewing area.

they were mainstream in the 90s.

Foldable screen phones are not cheap yet, economically it takes around 10 years to most technologies to get widely adopted. NFC is still uncommon for example.

gimmicky and tacky. Plus it serves no real benefit apart from it looking cool.

Work was paying for a new phone and figured I'd let them pay for a folding phone since I thought it was neat and had concerns about hinges and whatever for a personal phone. Almost 2 years later and no issues and I have to open and close it at least a couple times every workday.

I think most of the durability complaints in this thread are just FUD.

    >Phone screen has glaring crease.
    >Best use case is to more authentically emulate DS games.

bending screen is still shit, especially after some use, they are way too expensive and the big players like apple and google dont have one yet. I think the smart flip phones will catch on in a few years when the technology has improved and they get affordable.

  28. 6 days ago

Because most people are already used to carrying bricks in their pockets so having the phone be smaller isn't worth bothering with.

  29. 6 days ago

Because they cost as much as a half-decent used car.

I own the fold and the crease is getting worse everyday I use it. Old flip phones were perfect. These new shitty flip smart phones are downright garbage scams, I doubt my fold will be any value after 2 years of normal use because of the crease

Wtf they have folding phones now? This will pair up nicely with 3d television!
