My grandfather smoked for over 50 something years and died when he was like 76 from emphysema. Was it shitty? I guess it was, but death is never a pleasant sight no matter what a person dies of.
My other grandfather smoked for like 27 years and gave it up in the late 60’s. He died from prostate cancer. The docs told him when they found it it wasn’t worth doing surgery on him because it’s an “incredibly slow growing cancer and he’d die from something else at his age before the prostate cancer ever got him.”
He lived for another 12 years. The prostate grew so big he couldn’t piss at all on his own, then he had to get a permanent catheter the size of a garden hose shoved up his pecker and he got to cruise around for a couple of years, the last years of his life, with a blood and piss bag tied to his leg that was at the bottom of that catheter.

He told me he’d been smoking for 27 years before that, so when he shipped off to fight in WW2. He told me he’d always smoked cigs at work, but in the evening he’d go down to his chill basement and smoke pipe tobacco.

I remember as a kid, the local mall had a Friendly's' restaurant. in the lobby there was a cigarette vending machine. That was well over 30 years ago. Now a carton costs like 50 bucks. I heard stories about how people from up north will drive down here because it's actually cheaper here.
