Out of this whole meme I would only really say the last three have any legitimacy.
Serbia, but to a certain extent.
Franz was actually a decent guy, and the whole assassination thing is shady as hell. It may have been others who were pulling the strings.
>BRO, AUSTRIANS DEMANDING BEING IN CHARGE OF THE INVESTIGATION OF THE ARCHDUKE'S ASSASSINATION WAS TOTALLY UNREASONABLE! THEY WERE JUST TRYING TO FIND AN EXCUSE TO GO TO WAR!
Let's say the US vice president was assassinated in Guatemala. You think the FBI, the Secret Service and the CIA are just going to let the Guatemalan police take care of the investigation?
The only guilt of Austria Hungary is that did put a time limit on their ultimatum.
The ultimatum was intended to be rejected as a casus belli for invading Serbia. The actual demands were irrelevant. If Serbia had accepted them all Austria would have kept making demands until they had an excuse to invade.
Berchtold literally stayed up all night before the ultimatum was delivered adding clauses because he was worried Serbia would accept it.
Anarchists for repeatedly killing monarchs until they got one that was important to the peace of europe. Not that FF was so important on his own, rather he was a high enough member of the ruling class that no higher organ existed to mitigate the consequences of his death. No greater 'adult in the room' existed to say "well it was just Franz Ferdinand." Anarchists managed to attack the organization of society itself, and unsurprisingly gazillions of plebs died
In order of culpability >Serbia >Russia >Austria-Hungary >France >Germany >UK
Serbian government was definitely funding serbian nationalist terrorists in Bosnia. Russia only got involved out of desperation to not lose any influence. Austria Hungary shouldn't have pre-emptively mobilized against Russia to give them an excuse. France insisted on propping up the assbackwards Russian regime with loans because they were terrified of Germany. Germans had autistic delusions of grandeur. Brits are evil and smelled a money making opportunity.
Russia for turning a regional internal diplomatic into a shooting war. Serbians would have accept the Austrian ultimatum (which was nothing burger anyway) without Russian support.
>Russia declines to help Serbia
Nationalists and anarchists have assassinated you. BAD END

I honestly don't know how, after more than a hundred years, most people are still taught the myth that WW1 was caused by a series of entangling alliances dragging nations in, until all of Europe ended up at war by accident.
Germany wanted a war. They encouraged Austria to take a hard line with Serbia, then while Russia was still trying to find a peaceful solution, and France was debating whether the war could be limited to an eastern conflict without their involvement, Germany attacked both of them (and Belgium) almost simultaneously. Not only did Russia not declare war on Austria-Hungary, the Austro-Hungarians only declared war on Russia AFTER Germany had already invaded them.
There was no domino chain, there was just Germany.
sheesh, how hard is it to play the great man of history? Bismarck did everything right and it just made his people suicidally overconfident until they were almost back where they started.
>Serbia
They funded terrorists and played the victim when Austria demanded recompense >Austria
Never should have annexed the Bosnian shithole. Also should have acted more decisively immediately after the assassination. >Germany
Guaranteed a regional war would become global by invading France via Belgium >Russia
Stood with the dirty Serbs and mobilized their men when compromise was still possible
The only nation I see no fault in is ironically Britain. I don’t mention France because I can’t really blame them, but they also acted rashly so they are somewhere between the Brits and everyone else in the blame game.
The British were too focused on the Irish question to meaningfully impact the July crisis. Think ill of the Anglos if you wish, but in this case they were not the ones to blame.
>finessed geostrategically by germites
I don't think putting yourself firmly in the wrong internationally by invading a neutral country who've you signed a treaty to respect the borders of and guaranteeing that your war against two great powers becomes a war against three great powers was a German win. Especially when the third great power you're dragging in can cut all your undersea telegraph cables (cutting you off from the outside world) and strangle your commerce.

all I ask is that they privately not view belgium as a firm defensive position. gotta watch for that on future playthroughs

Well, it was France.
Russia started WWI
It was a localized conflict until they mobilized on Austria-Hungary's border in preparation for an attack and thus dragged Germany in
It's not really so much about any one person being wrong. These countries and empires have developed for hundreds of years and have overtime developed their own interests to follow. Eventually these different interests clashed together and their wasn't enough interest in using diplomacy to solve this clash, so it turned to war. Every country did a degree of wrong and a degree of right.
Serbia was playing with fire with their tacit endorsement of terrorists.
Austria-Hungary was just looking for an excuse to go to war with Serbia.
Russia antagonize literally all their neighbours by announcing a mobilization without officially declaring war on anyone such that technically nobody knew who they were mobilizing against, so unsurprisingly all three of their imperial neighbours ended up feeling threatened anfda ligning against them.
Germany invaded neutral countries for nogoddamn reason just because some dude thought it sounded like a good strategy.
France was supporting an autocratic shithole just because they invested a lot of money in them.
Britain got involved in a continental war that literally didn't concern.
Don't even get me started with the USA, they were the worst of all.
Serbia
serbs are just manlets
G*rmany

It was whites
Germany. Germany is always the bad guy.

Better?
Serbia, but to a certain extent.
Franz was actually a decent guy, and the whole assassination thing is shady as hell. It may have been others who were pulling the strings.
Serbs
Austria and Germany for the most part.

Serbia today is a dead, impoverished cultureless pariah state while we are a rich, respected society.
Mission accomplished, would invade again!
>pariah state
Alternative phrasing for a free and independent state.
I actually speak some serbian and can understand the 24/7 whining on theit tv. It's hilarious.
Rich maybe, respected? No.

the answer is always germans
That image is bullshit.

is this basically ww1 then?
No it isn't, that anon is a retard.

britain seriously bought into belgian neutrality, they got bluffed by germans? absolutely amateur. "Appeasement" before ww2 doesn't compare
Britain would have needed a reason to get involved. Without Belgium it would have taken months to find one.
I'm just saying that's not the eternal anglo we all know. Today they would be elbow deep in belgium training terror cells and spy networks
The British were too focused on the Irish question to meaningfully impact the July crisis. Think ill of the Anglos if you wish, but in this case they were not the ones to blame.

Serbia for being a rogue state that supports terrorism, and the Entente for defending that rogue state.
like you would've done any different in their place
Are you saying it was literally impossible for Serbia to not support terrorism?
serbia
S*rbs for being manlet warmongers with Napoleon complex
