Who is the best programmer currently alive? (OP)
      >Real answer: Donald Knuth.
Calling someone like that a mere "programmer" is silly, he's no Pajeet wasting time on bullshit ephemeral fad tech of the hour, but rather a theoretical CS theoretician or such. It's insane to think I was reading some dusty 1970s IEEE Computer journals and would see what he was up to at the time and here Knuth still is plugging away at his lifework with volumes projected years into the future. With the passing of McCarthy, Minsky, Dijkstra and other CS pioneers Knuth is like the last one alive and still active (and significantly active at that) while Ed Fredkin is still around but even his digital physics site is down.

        Anonymous

Calling knuth active is very much a figure of speech. His skills have not moved for 25 years, he refuses to upgrade or to learn of what has changed at all, and it shows in his "work" (if it can be called that).
Calling him something as competent as a programmer would be stupid, even pajeet programs better than he does.

          Anonymous

Haha, cope harder mere coder. For the Theoretical CS Chad, like Knuth, nothing has changed nor is there this illusory need to "upgrade" to some faddish Pajeetery tech, as the eternal Platonic truths of algorithm analysis are above the mere mortals tied to such mundane matters.

NTA but the sad truth of our times is that the best and the brightests are no longer working on physics, medicine, electronics, space exploration or the other things they did 60 years ago. No, instead they are fuelling the surveillance economy, working on ever newer ways to extract more money from your existence, and it will increasingly get worse.

We know FAANG has vast libraries of images they process and do image recognition on. Most likely they know more about your health than you do. This data is enormously valuable to the health and insurance industry. A bad gait will see your insurance premium rise inexplicably. Perhaps Apple knows you have advanced sarcoma, and you can no longer get reasonable health insurance. Perhaps FB saw you next to your car wreck, and voila, your car insurance premium took to the skies.

NDA or not, they would never admit to their contributions here.

I nominate Andreas Kling, but must admit it is a draw between him and Bellard.

although I like Andreas and his project, he's nowhere near the level of Bellard.

the Bellard's formula was discovered in 1997, a year you weren't even born yet. go back wanking on your ecelebs.

Not everyone is a zoomer like you.
Moreover not everyone (thank God) is clinically retarded as you are. After all, some people don't do such ludicrous things as posting on a tech board while being technologically illiterate as you love doing.

so making ffmpeg, qemu, tcc and a shit ton of other stuff is not a massive achievement then?
nocoder naggers don't have a say on this topic

It's a big achievement, but no more than any other non-pajeet-tier dev in a lifetime. Nothing particularly impressive comes into play in any of those software, it's just discipline and perseverance.

depends on the definition of the best.

if it's based on the influence/accomplishments I'd say it's ken thompson.

if it's based on some naggerlicious objective criterion like least bugs or best test coverage, he's probably some unknown guy.

if it's based on my ass, I'd say fabrice bellard.
