not much, really. i'm well read on the country and it's history and speak pashto decently, but otherwise i just got the visa and crossed. no real itinerary, just went where things took me. i had a few local friends tee'd up before so i chilled with them a lot, but if you speak one of the languages and have some good prior travelling experience you might be ok. lots of things in places other than kabul can be down to luck though.
