Xfce has that as well.
IceWM will never run on Wayland whereas both Xfce and MATE will be ported one day.
Is this the dock extension in MATE or a bloated "dock app"? I couldn't manage to install that extension when it first came out. I hope it's coming as default now
I prefer MATE over XFCE because of the Ubuntu MATE Radiant/Ambiant themes, it sucks ass that they're not the defaults on Ubuntu MATE anymore but they're easy to install even on non-Debian distros.
Xfce
Cinnamon wayland
Dwm Wayland
icewm + tint2
came to say this
icewm dunks on both
it has benefits of both. looking like old windows from xfeces and having tiling windows like on mate

xfce
xfce for me
>Xorg abandonwares
choose none
Mate! It actually consumes less resources despite having more functionality.
proof?
the man's word. kys. btw Use cinnamon

MATE is lighter than Xfce on both CPU and RAM.
MATE and KDE also support swapping WMs. In fact, MATE + Compiz is a pretty common combination (see Fedora).
Cute mouse
xfce. Xfce is far more modular than mate and kde. You can literally flawlessly swap out it's window manager for the likes of bspwm, plus no gayland.
>plus no gayland.
4.20 will have gayland
>You can literally flawlessly swap out it's window manager for the likes of bspwm
cant you do that on mate and kde
>Xfce is far more modular than mate and kde
not really. everything xfce can do, mate and kde can also, including changing the wm.
MATE without a doubt
xfce is terrible
xfce
kde wayland
Out of the two, MATE for sure. Xfeces sucks.
But is the real answer.
Why is it so much easier to make MATE look modern than doing the same with XFCE?
>
>modern
>literally a fucking dock
maybe kys

No, that's Plank.
install the rodent
i always just run mate with compiz
never had the urge to switch to anything else
SEXfce
MATE is tolerable with the Mint Start Menu though.
>SEXfece
Are you German by chance?
fedora mate enjoyer here
i havent figured out how to install nvidia driver on it though
MATE for laptops, XFCE for desktops.
Fluxbox
better question is which de is coupled with the best compositor or has the best compatible aftermarket compositor
Is my system good enough for Tumbleweed-KDE? If not, I guess I'll try the PidgeonDE (aka LXQt)

KDE
MATE, or Cinnamon if you can handle some bloat for nice animations.
