        >looking like old windows from xfeces
        You mean CDE?
        >having tiling windows like on mate
        Xfce has that as well.
IceWM will never run on Wayland whereas both Xfce and MATE will be ported one day.

Mate! It actually consumes less resources despite having more functionality.

MATE is lighter than Xfce on both CPU and RAM.

xfce. Xfce is far more modular than mate and kde. You can literally flawlessly swap out it's window manager for the likes of bspwm, plus no gayland.

MATE and KDE also support swapping WMs. In fact, MATE + Compiz is a pretty common combination (see Fedora).

not really. everything xfce can do, mate and kde can also, including changing the wm.

Out of the two, MATE for sure. Xfeces sucks.
      But is the real answer.

Why is it so much easier to make MATE look modern than doing the same with XFCE?

Is this the dock extension in MATE or a bloated "dock app"? I couldn't manage to install that extension when it first came out. I hope it's coming as default now

Is my system good enough for Tumbleweed-KDE? If not, I guess I'll try the PidgeonDE (aka LXQt)

I prefer MATE over XFCE because of the Ubuntu MATE Radiant/Ambiant themes, it sucks ass that they're not the defaults on Ubuntu MATE anymore but they're easy to install even on non-Debian distros.

MATE, or Cinnamon if you can handle some bloat for nice animations.
