I just looked into this recently and it looks shit. You can't annotate on the text itself. It just opens an adjunct note section that you can write into. Very trash and normie

Stock Kindle software is absolute trash even for ebooks. PDFs are way beyond its capabilities. But Koreader works perfectly with PDF - it can crop the pages, deskew, even reflow text pdfs, etc.

Also, DjVu/pdf that were scanned into black-white instead of grey (for better compression) look like jagged shit on normal screens, but exactly like paper on e-ink.

So an ereader can absolutely handle PDF files. There aren't that many options. Paperwhite isn't jailbreakable anymore, unless you can find one that's manufactured before 06.2022. I'd say buy the largest Kobo or Onyx you can afford.

Can only speak for myself, but I significantly prefer physical books for general reading. That said, when traveling e-readers are awesome. I used to take 4 or 5 books on a vacation or 2-3 books to read on a business trip, and now I only need to take a next-to-weightless e-reader. It's great if you're on the go.

I've got the Kindle 10th gen (brought November 2019) and I love it. I love how I can simply use my phone to send documents to my Kindle documents cloud. However I kind of regret not getting one of the more expensive models with the tactile buttons. Do they really make reading that just greater? Because honestly I've been very happy with my Paperwhite. I've even got a case for it with Van Gogh's Starry Night printed on it.

Honestly what you should just do is:

    >get a nice, new phone that just feels proper in your hands
    >I personally have a Galaxy S21+ Ultra 5G I got about a year ago.
    >Download Google Play Books. This will provide you with pretty much any "old book" you could want for free.
    >Download and sign up for Scribd. I believe Samsung users get a discount. I don't even know what the frick Scribd is but I could spend a couple lifetimes trawling through it.
    >Once you picked a browser of choice, use the browsers "Add to HomePage" option to add Project Gutenberg and Libgen.
    >Open these files with Google Play Books. It will treat just about each one as if they were Amazon Kindle files. It'll hook you up with Metadata, proper covers. And you can just read your stuff on there.

I tried Kindle but Google Books unironically the only truly acceptable app for not just reading and note taking, but also being able to just pull in books from everywhere (along with Magazines and Comics and such via Scribd). I've learned so much about my city's past by just looking up $0 books on Google Books and finding ancient biographies and almanacs and such. It's insane.

I simply can't do any of this with fkn Kindle.

Dude you can just download literally any book you want through zlib/libgen, add them to calibre, covert them(optional) and send them to your ebook, and this whole process won't take you more than 30 seconds. Plus you will avoid eye strain and/or migraine.

What better way to expose yourself for a tech illiterate pleb. It's almost like you're proud of it. Yes, Paperwhite isn't very fast for skimming 20+ MB pdf/djvu file. But still, the pages turn just fine. Epubs aren't a problem for it.
I suspect the cheapest Pocketbook devices might be atrocious (many users complain), but no one in their right mind will recommend one, and I've never even seen them mentioned here.

Please explain what exactly frustrates you about "libgen shit", whatever that means. There are dozens of methods of downloading ebooks and transferring them to the reader.

Does anyone know of any actual studies in regard to reading comprehension using eink vs paperback?

At least for me, paperbacks are very frustrating to handle, to the point where it's distracting me from reading. Ereaders are way comfier, and I would only compare them to hardcovers.

No, I'm there with you. The wife has a Kindle Oasis, and when I tried it the whole situation made it difficult for me to immerse myself into the book. But how will you put your nose against the semi-closed book, and ruffle the pages and smell what you've read?

How will you look at the edge of the book, and see the slightly discolored portion that marks where you've been, and reminisce?

When you go back and look at a book decades later, and notice Huck Finn doesn't once say the "Black person" word, how will you know which parts have been memory-holed, and which parts are you losing your mind?

11th gen has bigger screen (near 7 inches) instead of 6 inches. It also uses the faster Carta 1200 screen which improves page turning speed by a lot. I'd say the extra $30 is worth it. But Black Friday is coming so you'll probably get a sale out of it by waiting instead of buying right now.
