because microsoft makes money from collecting and selling your data, selling an os is a very small part of it. Windows 10 and 11 is basically free and they let you use it without paying for a reason.

I wouldn't be surprised if microsoft actually argued that in court one day, but the average normie has no idea that microsoft even collects their data through windows, let alone the fact that they can disable it. As long as most normies don't know or don't care, their business model will work fine. They didn't give out free versions of 2000, xp, vista, 7, etc. back in the day because they weren't data collecting beasts like 10 and 11 are; so they relied on sales primarily. By the win10 era they had data collection, telemetry, etc. all figured out which is why they pushed windows 10 so hard

They have said, many, many times, that windows isn't for people who play games on it. The fact you can use windows to play a video game is a side effect of windows being able to run business software and if all game compatibility broke, they wouldn't care.

Not a stretch considering leaks show future windows versions will be cloud based. That sounds like a nightmare for gaming if you don't have perfect internet. microsoft already tried the 24/7 online thing with the xbox one and it flopped, but pretty much everyone has an internet connection now and most people don't care about offline media, etc.

What would realistically happen if they did something full retard like disable 32 bit programs (something they have discussed doing before) is that one of their actual customers like Adobe would throw a fit and they would backpedal, hard. The cloud stuff doesn't actually offend their actual customers because they want to be in the cloud, too.

              Anonymous

realistically speaking, how many people that use windows play games really? Most of the userbase is people that only use chrome to open up facebook, gmail, maybe youtube, etc. and then do nothing else. Most people don't even need windows, what they need a chromebook.
People use stuff like photoshop or autocad but you wouldn't need fast internet for that if it was running on the cloud. People that play video games (or take them seriously rather) are kind of a minority. They'll need to get better internet if they can't run their games or stick to an older version of windows (until microsoft abandons it and devs stop supporting it).
That's why I'm really happy with Valve investing money into linux. Playing games on linux was a joke even just a few years ago, but with proton you can easily run most games on steam right now, and the steam deck was a massive success. It will only get better as the years go by. Some people on this board have a massive hate boner for linux but I've never seen them making a good argument as to why microsoft should have a monopoly over humanity with windows.

issue with macs is that most software doesn't even work on it. Apple likes to have their own inner circle of programs and everything else doesn't matter to them. Just look at how bad macs are for gaming right now.
I think the issue is just that linux elitists are a very loud minority. Most casual linux users don't even mention it unless they're asked about it or it's related to the topic.
I like the linux philosophy though, as in it's your computer and you can do whatever the hell you want with it, and no one can tell you otherwise. You can also choose whatever distro you want that appeals to your preferences the most, it's not a one size fits all situation.

Are you stupid? Windows 95 famously had a memory allocator which had incorrect behavior; a flaw that programmers working at Maxis abused heavily while writing SimCity. Their reliance on the allocator behavior ened up being a problem later, when the bug was fixed SimCity would cause segfaults and a crash. Microsoft knew that games were a huge selling feature, and hard coded an if statement into their memory allocator specifically to check if the application was SimCity, and behave in the old way for that single program.

Having been down the rabbit hole. People are fed up with the bloat and shit from Microsoft. It splits into 2 groups here, some will debloat until shit becomes unstable while others remove only what's needed. Arguably Win10 is in a good place currently, only recieving security updates and not breaking the OS every 6 months.

Next comes performance and latency. Microsoft are continually adding power savings to Windows, messing with timers etc. and makes gaming feel like shit. This divides into 2 crowds again with what I call "facts vs feel". The facts guys test with LDAT tools etc. for input latency while the " feel" guys only go from how the mouse feels. Having been on both sides, they are both correct unironically. Some settings do change how the mouse feels while having zero impact on latency (ie XHCi handoff on vs off in BIOS). Security and mitigations etc. also play a part. The only use case scenario I've seen was somebody using it on a steam deck and getting 10-20 more fps.

Then it comes to which """distro""" you want to use. Many of them have moved away from custom ISO's after feedback from the community and Microsoft taking AME down etc. Try them all and see how it goes.

The people using it are a mixture. Some have top end hardware and want the maximum FPS / lowest latency while others are turd worlders on 15 year old laptops. About 5 years ago the groups got shitted up by normalfags and kids because their favourite YouTuber said to go use this "ISO for more FPS". The public chats are full of retarded kids bricking their PC's, not knowing what drivers are, fucking up their parents laptop etc. and losing all their files. Funny as fuck to read.

tick tock, i'm sure its continued usage won't be attached at the hip to endless whining online about how much better the experience is while simultaneously complaining about how they're making it so you can't play anything.

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 is even supported until 2032 and is arguably the best version to use because it comes with zero of the bloatware.

    >What's the point of all these custom .ISOs?
They are a botnet, just like XP Gold edition.

There's always been tweaking groups but they have blown up in the past 5 years. Really says how much people don't like modern Windows.

I think using these alt windows packages for removing bloat is a potential OPSEC mistake. What these iso packages do is understandable (I've tried ReviOS in the past), but what irks me is the idea that someone can just include something malicious in their iso package and labeling it as "Windows for Gamers". If I recall correctly the way these windows builds are made is in a proprietary manner with closed-source code so I don't think it's too tinfoil-y to think that's scary.

Most of these aren't ISO's anymore and are post-install tweaks in forms of playbooks or scripts. All open source.

    >who is this aimed at?
So you know how Microsoft stops updating old operating systems because they're cheap and all of a sudden nobody releases new programs compatible with them anymore? Those people use custom .ISOs so they can still get new versions of shit on their old hardware. I've also seen people with shit PCs run pre-release versions of Windows since they're often compatible with the same shit but have a lot lower hardware requirements.
