    Japanese are cuter.

The madness of Russia is bringing them closer. I think SKorea is a more open Western society today, while Japan was the economic powerhouse but is now in economic stagnation and is maybe less Western Christian and more closed. Both Korean and Japanese have rich histories, and they have a lot of modern influence on world wide pop culture, Korea is more popmusic and movie influence and Japan anime or video games. However Japan is a single nation, they have bridges linking the four main islands and in Korea you get politics and have crazy Kim just north of Seoul. If you learn to read Japanese kanji, this would take time for an Englsih speaker but it will help understand old Chinese characters the Sinosphere uses the China writing characters a lot, in every Chinatown diaspora, across the world, in Singapore, Korean, and Vietnamese are known as kanji, hanja, and chu-Han. For speaking I think both are about the same, however in Korean you are learning more new 'sounds' maybe not prononuced as written and although that is a new sound to learn Japanese has other diffculty there are a lot of subtle honorifics in Japanese. Both had a monarchy and caste and hierarchical and old way of speaking to inferiors or elders the Koreans still use formal speech while Japanese continue to use honorifics, the youth care less they use more slang and see the old way of speaking as archaic.

If you only want to go to phrase book level 'Hello', thank you, can I buy a beer ...then maybe Japan has the easier total beginner guide book, after really learning and learning new Korean sounds then I think Korean should be somewhat eaiser to learn. Korean has less books it could be easier now but for a while there was very little written material about reading or study or language writing material. A multi lingual Steve Kaufmann who speaks over 20 languages a skilled polyglot spoke on his difficulty of learning Korean due to lack of material. He is a skilled respected linguist but had a difficult time with Korean, at this time Korea might have been unstable and he married a Japanese woman, Japan was in a growing economic bubble so perhaps he had more of a personal drive to stay with Japanese, what motivates one person to learn a language will depend on yourself and your own connection to the languages.

Both Korea and Japan will have remote places you jsut never understand, far off places you might not get. They do have old dialects far from the cities spoke by the older generation, which both young Korean and Japanese themselves might not understand. The untrained English speaking ear might think they all sound quite similar or even sound Chinese, however speaking Chinese is completly different with rising and falling and bending tone sounds which Koreans and Japanese do not use.

Sentence construction is easy and Grammatically Japanese and Korean do share some a lot similarities or similar sound. At the very very begining it might easier to learn Japanese, although after getting past the phrase book tourism word you might stumble, learning Hiragana and Katakana can be a little challenging, you might get lost with honorfics or context.

There is no 'John looked up and seen the Sky WAS Blue' they will usually end there sentences with a "to be" word, in Japanese there is a tbh, de aru, or gozaimasu, or a sound of 'ga', or ta, or ikumasu or deshita ta the end of a word, Korean makes no distinction for the choice of verb to be (am, are, is) between first-person, second-person and third-person subjects in the Korean language and only a single verb is . Koreans will use many different politite formal and informal or casual just to say 'To Be' in Korean the same word is used to say “I” or “me.” but the word will change depending on inferior or superior or politeness of a sitution. Both Japanese and Korean does get more complicated than 'I book read' to say 'I am reading a book at this moment', a Chinaman might shout 'I smoke you mind?' as perfectly normal question which almost sounds aggressive or passionate so maybe they are maybe less blunt and sharp as Chinese. You might hear repeating sound in Korea it has a lot of topic markers or characters that come immediately after the nouns, these marker indicadtors or Korean particles, the Korea topic marker word is almost like importance or emphasis and implies contrast.
They however can at times sound childish, like silly japanese poetry haiku, you don't need an ownership with 'person' and often they will not use a 'that' or a 'the' word...
      'Spring ocean
      Swaying gently
      All day long.'
      - Another poem ....
      'canola flowers.
      Moon in eastern sky is.
      Sun is Western sky so.'
...Tsuki ha higashi ni ...月は東に << that first picture means 'Moon' 月 and the 3rd letter or second picture idea mean 'East' 東, in primary school most Japanese would know kanji. Every culture has their own pronunciation but most in the Oriental Asian would recognize these pics even as kids or teens, they are combined with other pictures to make ideas or sentences but the sentences are simple.
that is literally how they would write poetry and this short form lacking detail is still in use in ther language today.
more like 'beer was drank' you don't need to say John was sitting down and drank a beer, or 'he was drinking the bottle of beer' in some ways they can speak vague like Spanish when they talk nonsense, river deep, mountain high...sky was blue, bird fly sky ...grammar of Japanese and Korean are almost identical. They are both Subject-Object-Verb languages. Yet Neither language is easy, they are both far removed from English Japan has four alphabets the Westernized Romanji which you know, both Japanese and Koreans pronouce loan words from the USA or British very badly. Japan it also has hiragana alphabet, katakana and old Chinese character alphabet of which there may be 3,000 + picture characters to learn, the Koreans normally only use one alphabet, Hangul it is also considered a revived language. Even if you learn to write say 500 pictogram characters the Kanji or Hanzi Chinese character used in Japan it does not mean you truly know it, you might need to learn around 2,000 kanji to be classed as fluent. A written picture character it can be joined to other Japan Kanji / Chinese based characters, or a new hiragana alphabet character put before and after can totally change how each is pronounced in several different contexts, the Japanese themselves spend a lifetime learning their own language.

Both Koreans and Japanese can be somewhat nationalistic and don't admit how close their language family are, I suspect some older dialects might have been even closer in the past, both of them share language construction ideas from Chinese and both on them in turn would have word influence on the modern Chinese. The US military ranks Chinese Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Japanese all as high difficult and will take a lot more time for an English speaker to learn compared to Italian, Afrikaans, Dutch, Spanish, French or German. If you are thinking of moving or learning a lot of it will be self motivation, which culture do you like more and which one you want to learn more.

Koreans culturally kind of had a clip on their shoulder about being invaded ruled by Japanese, old Tokyo Mayors and Governors would have made relations more toxic with his Dinosaur attidudes thinking his Race superior and the others the sickly of Asia, he finally Died in February 2022. Relations are closer than ever maybe thanks to crazy Putin.

Nobody really knows what Korea was like before the Japanese civilized them. There is almost no literature, almost no cultural accounts. It was for thousands of years a backwater satrap of China.

That s a lot of bullshit. There are plenty of historical sites of pre Japanese Korea. They preserve their history very well.

You can find their palaces within the city.

I am an American soldier that spent a tour in Korea. You haven't left Louisiana.

Personally I think Korea is superior and potentially big if North Korea ever reunified. The amount of rare earth under North Korea and the technology of the South would make them a powerhouse in the region.

Culturally south korea has its own entertainment industries for drama movies music.

I cant tell you about Japan since I only know them for anime and videogames. Korea also has a smaller video game industry but not consoles.

        >There are plenty of historical sites of pre Japanese Korea.
There are a BARE HANDFUL of texts the earliest of which was composed some three thousand years after the traditional founding date of Korea. Before the 1500's there are so few Korean books that you could put them all on a small shelf, this includes works that are copies and which incorporate material from each other.

Best records we have are from China which describes the area as having a shamanistic religion, with barley and onions production and some rice, but not much. It was mostly forested and it was conquered by China repeatedly and taxed in grain and tea. Culturally we know that the Japs, the Koreans, and the Sakhalin people all descend from a similar culture which displaced the Ainu people in Japan and possibly on Jeju as well. But no, they did not preserve their history very well because before Buddhist monks came in with their Chinese literacy, there were no written records.

This is true. I think it was the JP Morgans report where they predicted that if korea were to be unified, they have the potential to be greater than japan and be one of the most significant economies in the world just right behind us and china

When people compare korea to japan, they are only really comparing a country that’s half of its potential

that isn't true at all. since the bronze age there have been records kept and archaeological finds which show a relatively advanced culture. they had the 3 Kingdoms period when they had intra-peninsula wars and battles and politicking.
japan has been btfoing them for a few thousand years though, on their way to china to lose wars.
at the national museum in seoul you can see plenty of european-equivalent technologies and items which the rulers had 1000, 2000, 3000 years ago.
the record keeping of the royal court was good. serf life was terrible though and still is in korea.
korean peninsula was rich because they had Iron and exported iron to china. they had the trapping of 1st millenia rich country.

koreans are homosexual slaves who endlessly cry and whine about muh genocide muh comfort women when their entire country's industry was built by Japan, and every institution in Korea that isn't literal slavery is a cargo cult from Japanese occupation, which they endlessly complain about like the homosexual American cock-suckers they are.
Their country is circumcised too, like their cocks, and they're christcucks to boot.
Understandably, they all drink themselves to death. Koreans are impossible to respect, inveterate homosexuals and losers. They keep building statues to their comfort whores in California too. Those women were lucky to at least experience a real man in their lives, but since they're good-for-nothing Korean subhumans they whine and demand reparashuns. Literal naggers.
By contrast, Japan is a formerly military aristocracy with easily top 3 best food and top 3 best art, with educated, clean people who don't cry and whine like nagger subhumans. Japanese people are well-mannered and understand honor, whereas Koreans roil in the filth and betray each other at every opportunity.
TLDR Koreans aren't people at all, whereas Japs are actually a top tier civ.
