Why not, it would be cool for someone to show those uppity Balkanians and Greeks their place, and to tame Arabs

The solution is to create a new and improved empire that learned from past mistakes, not try and return to one that already failed

I think the stability it entailed was an improvement over the current situation in the middle east, but it fell, as empires are wont to do, and was ultimately unable to overcome its rivals or it its own shortcomings as a nation.

          Agreed.

If Europe had know what a fricking headache the Mideast would become, i don’t think they would have dismantled the Ottoman Empire. Except for the British that is.

don't care. They were majority shia and aligned more with Iraq. Ottoman's just appointed mamluks and let the places they conquered rot.

It was the worst thing that happened to the balkans and middle east and is universaly hated by both slavs and arabs

In 1945 the line betveen 70% literacy and -20% literacy in south east europe literaly folloved the border of the ottoman empire
On one side people had fricking printing presses and universities and comunicated with the rest of the western world, and later had telegraphs and railroads and fricking penicilin, and on the other they had harač and zulum

It was a big, massive bloody shit, like when someone has a shit so massive it turns out blood covered, that

That was intentional though, they had a policy where you were only allowed to use the printing press in Constantinople. It was a good way to control the population, and pretty logical if you're running an empire as big as that. You don't want guys spreading around manifestos and stirring up revolts all the time in places a thousand miles away from your imperial capital.

was it really that hard to set up bootleg presses by importing parts from europe under the table?

The Ottoman navy controlled the eastern Mediterrean and their governors controlled the local armies. More importantly, you would have to know that 1) a printing press would be beneficial to your region, which would not be obvious to people who never used it and 2) in your interests to benefit your region, which would rarely be the case for the people the Ottoman put in positions of power. For example, if you're the Mamelukes, the Ottomans already accepted you as the elite of Egypt. You're already enjoying being the local boss, so introducing the printing press would do nothing but harm your position.

The more average, non-Mamluk you ruled over would have to fulfill not just 1) and 2), but have the means to buy a printing press (almost impossible given Ottoman economic policies which kept everyone but the elite poor) and convince the people around them, who are probably all extremely poor and have much more immediate worries, to care about this and understand 1) and 2). So it was extremely unlikely without outside intervention. The Balkans were more fortunate in this regard, as they directly bordered the rest of Europe, so it was harder for the Ottomans to keep bad ideas out. But up until their decline period, the Ottoman authorities were still pretty competent. For example, a Greek printing press was set up by Nicodemus Metaxas and Cyril Lucaris in 1627, but the Ottoman authorities quickly tracked it down and closed it.

was probably bad overall, but when you consider the degree to which things went to shit once they were gone it's hard not to miss them.
A better empire would integrate its subjects to a degree that it isn't succeeded by vicious bouts of mutual ethnic cleansing, but man the independent Balkan and Arab states made the Ottomans look good by comparison

As an Arab I definitely want it back just so it could fall again and enjoy the lingering disdain from the Turk's knowing that they lost out on all that oil, plus all the slaughtering of Turkish conscripts in the Middle East must have been fun. The israelites had their eyes set for the Middle East since the beginning; even if it was still controlled by the Ayyubid Kurds or the Quraysh it would still have been gang raped by all the ZOGs.

I am going to hijack this thread for a similar question.

Why do we see the centers of technological and societal progress shift north over time? It seems all technological progress today is in northern countries and their colonies (Australia), but 1000 years ago it was in places like North Africa and Iberia.
