VDGG is the most underrated one
Gentle Giant is the most original
Magma is the most consistent as a whole
Magma is French
vdgg is rightly underrated because Pete couldn't be bothered to learn sparity and shutting up a bit once in a while... they have these GREAT riffs and compositions, but then piss all over them with endless screeching. If they'd dealt with that better they could be seen as equals to KingCrimson (early period let's say)
VDGG does similar moody atmosphere to what the German Bands were doing but doesn't do it quite as well as CAN or Amon Düül ii do. Gentle Giant,Camel, and ELP are by far the most enjoyable and memorable out of all of them.
VDGG and King Crimson were mutually influenced. Hammil's singing was inspired by Gabriel and Bowie's. There's no kraut relation to the band, not even their name
I read that somewhere. I guess I could be wrong. I prefer Amon Düül ii for the whole dark Prog kinda thing though. That and Hawkwind but a lot of other German and even a handful of French and Italian Bands too.
VDGG strenght it's about the lyrics and the heavily complex compositions, the atmosphere it's also important but it changes for almost every album
If you can watch these two performances and tell me that they are not the absolute best then ngmi
Best Brit Prog is Genesis, by far.
At their best, they mog the rest.
GG has moments, but they don't know what to do with their talent and lack musicality, a lot of the time.
>lack musicality
This song does in 4 1/2 minutes what most bands try to in 20 minute epics about eggs
i actually agree, i like gentle giant but they remind me of ranaldo and the loaf stupid gimmick songs overcomplicated. My favourite GG song is why not even though it's mostly simple blues derivative shit, i know it's probably technically their most pleb track but it's actually groovy. i find most of their discog to be imbalanced and not actually enjoyable to listen to, unlike vdgg and soft machine, it is sovlless to me.
Exactly - I’d love to love gg more than I do, but that ‘fookn fairy dust’ just isn’t there - even if said dust is just having a decent groove
I absolutely love Why Not
If that is Phil Shulman doing the high vocals during the chorus then they lost a lot of their power without him in more ways than one
Gentle Giant has a ton of musicality idfk what you're talking about. They're also more engaging thematically than Genesis.
for me, it's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NvJc1C4TKo
LULZ is a Gentle Giant board, so them
Difficult to say. King Crimson has the most consistent discography, that's a fact. But I prefer VdGG and Soft Machine. The highs are higher with those.
honestly it's Yes based on Close to the Edge alone
But gates of delirium is a better epic, organ orgasm aside. That ‘soon’ emotional moment is glorious, and I’m not that big on Jon Anderson, but that’s his shining moment.
Close to the Edge is prog-wank.
Wow what a thorough and well thought out criticism! Please, elucidate us on what makes it "wank"
Ok cuckgau
i'd vote for that if its an albums poll
but i think Genesis is a better band overall.
Yes is really great tho
stfu you don't know what you're talking about
Hawkwind, if you let them count
lmao what a shit album cover
shit album too
How come no one ever talks about Moody Blues on here? Does LULZ hate Moody Blues or something?
Because that was a band for girls to swoon over nights in white satin
I find it hypocritical how they look down on Days of Future Passed but are all collectively autistic for Pet Sounds.
True. But people are naive, bands with living legacies have marketing departments making sure there’s always content out there glorifying them. It’s far from natural - or just, of course. As long as the major label is making its money…
Because it's not Scaruffi-approved.
i voted genesis, but camel should be in this poll
There's no way King Crimson doesn't always come out on top in a strawpoll like this. They're great for sure, but also babby's first prog and will win just because half the voters haven't listened to the other bands outside of their most popular songs. I'd wager easily more than twice the number of people on this board that have heard a single soft machine record have listened to multiple King Crimson LPs.
I'd be more interested in a poll to see what people have listened to, really.
>King Crimson is more "babby's first prog" than Genesis or Yes
Kill yourself, pseud.
For a zoomer, it’s true, tho, he’s right
Most zoomers know about King Crimson because JJBA which is sad. And Soft Machine too I guess. No wonder they aren't familiar with VdGG.
I learned about Soft Machine from Scaruffi (lol)
Didn't know they were referenced in Jojo, but it doesn't surprise me. I don't think most zoomers that watch Jojo absorb the music references beyond name recognition, except that they add Roundabout to their spotify playlist or whatever.
t. zoom zoom
The anime? I just know the roundabout meme, what’s their use of soft machine?
For a second I thought you meant the kanye album… I was always amazed there weren’t more prog samples in hip-hop, wasted opportunity. All those decades stuck on the same damn James brown albums
All characters, called "Stands", are named after rock bands.
Ok thanks. Well if they don’t even use the music I’m not sure that kind of “homage” actually helps
I'm sure they want to, but imagine how much money it would cost, paying for all those licenses.
Guarantee if you go into the comments for any youtube upload of "NOT 21st century schizoid man IGNORE THIS VIDEO MR. FRIPP" you'll find a bunch of people commenting thanking Jojo for introducing them to King Crimson. Still probably not many of the people who watch that stuff, but a decent amount.
Let’s hope it saves them from anime then
Anime is a cool medium full of coomer trash and boring long running shows.
I can dig the artsy wank, shorter series, and films that take advantage of the medium. NGE and especially End of Evangelion are some of my favorite media in general.
Fag. Anime is the coolest shit ever.
One Piece is bad and the 2000s are never coming back.
>One Piece is bad
Low IQ
at least I'm high enough IQ not to get into this shit
>JJBA
what?
>what is Google
Quit LARPing as an out-of-touch boomer.
you really think everybody knows what that is? i had to google it too and i've heard of it before (but never seen it).
Googled it club here too.
What even is the piece
We should know that by now there’s more than a hundred manga
I don't expect acronyms to be google-able without additional context
You are as bad as zoomers that don't know what King Crimson is
>classic prog rock band vs japanese goyslop
>japanese goyslop
Do you not see the oxymoron?
Website culture you dense retards, we have numerous banners regarding that specific show.
why's that? why should i care or know about some kids show that wasn't even on when i was a kid? i'm not a kid anymore and i don't have any kids so why would i be watching that?
Funny because it's an adaptation of an 80s manga so even if you are a generation x nagger JJBA is literally from your time. And you should watch anime regardless it's good stuff. I bet you are American and enjoy Reddit-esque movies like Star Wars and Marvel.
i didn't say it was bad. i don't watch animation anymore. i've seen some marvel and star wars but i'm not a fan of it. i'm just not in the demographic for that kind of stuff anymore and that's ok.
>boomer doesn't know there's anime aimed at an older audience
The older audiance is just manchildren though. Maybe people who are nostalgic about it. That's it.
stfu you don't know what you're talking about
In terms of exposure through songs, Yes and Genesis are certainly more popular.
In terms of LPs, though, I absolutely think ItCock is THE prog entry record. Close to the Edge is probably the closest second, but it's always been my impression that it isn't that close.
it HAS to be Yes, I get a brain orgasm when I hear TFTO
>No votes for VDGG
homosexuals
based, get fucked nerd
Fight me
but I'm a twink
I’ve been in the thread all day but voting on an online poll? Ew gross
Are there any instrumental versions of VDGG albums available? I might change my mind then
Just listen to this band instead. All the best instrumentation and atmospheres of VDGG with the slight sophistication of ELP & Gentle Giant and better vocals
Aaah yes, great choice. Also I just make my own instrumental edits but some things you just can’t work around.
for me its genesis
used to prefer vdgg but when I stopped being depressed their music resonated with me less
how did you acquire such power?
Not really full prog, but Fish-era Marillion has a real magic to it.
Genesis
british prog sucks
Gentle Giant,Camel,ELP,Hawkwind, and King Crimson all have there moments. Genesis is pretty cringe and so is Yes at least to me although I've been able to enjoy some Yes at points. Van Der Gaf Machine and Soft Machine are fucking lame. I probably like The German Bands more Overall and I do tbh enjoy some of the earlier RUSH but as a whole there are some pretty good Classic Brit Prog Bands.
ITALIAN PROG>>>>>
svensk progg >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>No option for the best British prog band
ngmi bros
Bruh they’re fun sometimes but let’s be real
henry cow. do people even consider them prog nowadays?
If you don't consider both Krautrock and RUSH as Prog still you're just being a twat.
krautrock isn't prog you dumbass. it's completely different. I don't give two shits about rush but can and amon duul have absolutely nothing in common with genesis or yes
It's still "progressive" in more than one sense
It still uses a lot of the same musical tropes etc. Irdfg how Archangels Thunderbird by Amon Düül ii or Hero by Neu! don't fit 90% of Prog Tropes. People only put a distinction because hipsters like those
King Crimson is my favorite band, but Gentle Giant is the closest we'll ever get to a perfect, ideal band. We'll never see that level of decentralized creativity again. I'd legit pay >$500 to see even a spinoff like Three Friends if they ever toured again
does gong count?
Are we gonna revive /prog/ or not?
Jethro Tull
Eat shit. More people like Pink Floyd than your shit Gentle Giant who nobody really cares about. "Other" means Pink Floyd. And don't give me that shit that Pink Floyd isn't prog. The word prog was originally coined to describe bands like Pink Floyd. They built the genre. Everyone else followed their lead.
Why are Pink Floyd fanboys the biggest homosexuals in the world?
Pink Floyd was better at riffing psychedelic rock
Prog isn't about capes or compex time signatures, it's about the infinite possibilities and variations that the holy trinity of bass, drums, guitars and keys brings.
With keys especially (organ, synths, mellotron, etc), or added strings, the palette is as wide as possible, and from there: anything goes.
That is prog. The rest is dressing.
>the holy trinity of bass, drums, guitars and keys
I don't think you know what a trinity is, anon.
Nah that’s on purpose man, like a musketeers joke
Is it still a parody when it’s that dead on?
God I hate those “quirky” vocal arrangements, this is one of the main reasons people have good reason to hate prog
>GG this low
Wtf I thought this was a Gentle Giant board...
>Wtf I thought this was a Gentle Giant board...
Nah they're shit
rude
This was genuinely one of the worst albums I had ever heard.
